This book was highly touted in many publications, based on that I suggested it to my book club. Not a single member liked this book! As a New Yorker I recognize the people in The Emperor's Children, hell I even know some of them. But I could care less about them and could not fathom why this book was so highly recommended.

This is actually a well-written, short and tight thriller, set in the 1960s "Man from U.N.C.L.E." series, with a touch of fantasy at the end. Napoleon and Ilya are dispatched to Romania to investigate the murder of an U.N.C.L.E. agent. They find themselves caught up in an apparent vampire scenario involving a descendant of the Drakula family, Forrest Ackerman, wolves, the lost treasure of the Huns, and other fun touches. The writing is professional, smooth, and witty--great fun!

My least favorite in the series thus far. It took me awhile to get through this book. I put it down and read a few books in between. Still not sure why I was less interested in this book than the others, it just didn't do anything for me.

Was really surprised by this book & author. It was recommended by another author I read (Kim Harrison) and I have to agree with her if you're looking for this type of paranormal/fantasy book. Beautiful imagery from Vicki and the picture she paints for you is astoundingly vivid so you can see the entire canvas. Great first book from her and I've already bought the second in the series to read.

** spoiler alert ** Two stars for predictable plot and heavy handed messages. The story is interesting enough, but the bee metaphor is a bit overwrought. I was also frustrated at characters who did things without reason...Why DID Rosaline spit on the shoes of those men? Did she think they were going to laugh that one off? And Lily carries a handful of mouse bones around in her pocket because sometimes you just need something to hold onto? Really? I hate to be overly negative. I really loved this one the first time around. It's a great story, and I love that it's about women, and growing the courage to nurture and mother yourself because I'm all about self-reliance. I love that it's written by a fellow Southerner and a woman. It just failed to grab me this time, unfortunately, and I was really ready for it to be over.
