So this was definitely an interesting book. I really really enjoyed the first third or half of it. The way that Brooks set things up, telling the story that, if this were really non-fiction, the reader would already know, was quite clever. But it got pretty old soon after that -- too many snippets of dis-connected sub-sub-stories. Here is an apocalyptic, truly world-changing event, and we get neither the "historical" view which tells us what happened in a straight-forward way. Nor do we see a microscopic view of how this war affected one or a few people -- people who become characters we learn and care about. Obviously that is the whole point of this book: to tell the overall story via snippets of oral history. And it was very well done. But after reading it, it feels like empty calories -- like there was nothing of substance in it for me to hold onto. And that's kind of a letdown.

A truely imaginative story with deep theological elements. I was challenged by its themes and entertained by its wit.

Intricate story about the murder of a woman with an identical twin. Her murder is somehow entwined with the decision she and her sister made the night before to switch identities for the evening. There are twists and surprises throughout (unfortunately, I figured out the big one early on). Interesting book that will keep you turning the pages. I listened to the story and it made a long trip very short. Highly recommend if you like mystery, suspense and romance.

not bad. I liked his earlier book NAKED better, but it's not a bad read.

Well, you would think I would like a Pulitzer Prize winning book...I didn't, I wanted to, Oprah picked it for her Book Club...I kept reading it because I was hoping that, in the end, it would be worth it, it wasn't for me....

Good, but gruesome. There is a catastrophic nuclear event and only a few people survive, those who are old, and those that are pre-pubescent, and a certain other few who have a particular issue. And then there are those who are may not be fully human. Teenagers Alex and Tom, and 8-year old Ellie, become a family of sorts as the try to find their way to some sort of civilization while avoiding the other teenagers who changed into monsters at the first flash of the electromagnetic pulse. Who are now eating their way through all the flesh lying about, searching for warm, still moving bodies to rip tongues and eyes from. There may have been a better way to introduce us to the horrific zombie-like cannibals than stumbling on them lifting warm, purple pieces out of the abdomen out of someone's grandmother, but it was certainly effective! I don't particularly find myself grossed out by stuff like this but it was way graphic, way well-described, and I was pretty well put off by it. The rest of the story was pretty good, though. Fast, scary, and realistic (as far as we can fathom), I found myself wondering how we will survive any major event like this. All this dystopian, apocalyptic fiction may actually be giving us a roadmap to how to live in a world with vastly changed rules and society. Time to learn how to make bows and arrows, and how to purify water- gain some skills to exchange for safety in a crowd!
