One of my all-time favorite books. I teach middle school English and this is one of my students' favorites as well. It's rare to find a YA book that appeals to both girls and boys and Zevin accomplishes this while taking on a touchy subject for teens. Death is handled in a way so that it is not scary yet it is not glorified either. A great book for teachers because of the many themes and literary allusions that prevail throughout the novel.

What a ride! This is everything I want in a thriller and well written and plotted to boot. Naturally it wasn't on my list of what I'm supposed to be reading this year. This is the third book by Abrahams I've devoured in the last couple of years. Oblivion is actually from earlier (2005). Heck if I can remember who recommended it. Doesn't matter. Shortly after Nick Petrov takes on a missing person case, he wakes up in a hospital bed with his memory of the last two weeks gone. There's a strong 'memento' feel about the book and watching Nick as he struggles to find answers turns this into a real page turner.

This book was super cute and entertaining! I had never read anything by Tera Lynn Childs before, but had read good things about her mermaid books. When I was offered an ARC of Sweet Venom, I pounced on it. First, I loved the plot of this novel. Triplets, separated at birth, who are descended from the gorgon Medusa. It's their job to protect the world from the monsters and other beasties who managed to escape their own realm and pop into ours. Gretchen is very accustomed to the monster killing routine. She's been saving the world, one monster killing at a time, for over 4 years. Grace and Greer are a whole other story. They know nothing of their heritage or a world where monsters can make a cameo at any moment. When the world of the three sisters collide, both hysterics and monster ass-kickings ensue. I love mythology and a lot of YA is currently employing mythological references in their plots. I love how Childs re-wrote the mythology we know and tailored it to fit her novel. Mythology is YA is definitely my favorite trend right now. I also loved that this novel was super quick to read because you just couldn't put it down. I had to know what was waiting around each plot twist. I also really enjoyed the light quality this novel has. The plot of Sweet Venom could have been very dark, but it was almost upbeat. There was the right mix of mystery, action, peril-inducing situations, without angst and a lot of the darkness that generally surrounds this kind of tale. And then there's the triplets themselves. Love, love, love Gretchen, Grace, and Greer! They were all so different with really unique voices and unique lives. I was totally engaged by them. I love that they were very human despite not being totally human. The 3 Gs are great characters. I really enjoyed this book. I cannot wait for the sequel!

Despite being a typical journey into space story, battling an unknown alien race, it's also filled with bantering conversation, a growing relationship between Ely and Emerson that includes plenty of sizzling hot sex and some good friendships. The twists and turns regarding the aliens, the starships and how they got free from the aliens were all handled well and were done believably. There are things I had problems with. Some of the phrases were repeated, others were too sweet or cheesy and others were just downright inappropriate for what was going on in the scene. This didn't stop me from enjoying the story, it was just a little bothersome. The next story is First Contact.

I suppose that before I say anything else about this book, I ought to address the first thing I always hear from people who have read "She's Come Undone": "I had to keep looking at the title page - I could not believe a man wrote it!" Yes, Lamb does embody the narrative voice of a troubled young woman amazingly well, but what is far more impressive to me is the voice of Dolores herself - whether she is engaged in the most self-destructive of behaviors, surviving the most intimate of violations, or emerging from intense depression and self-loathing, her voice carries along the reader like a tidal wave, absolutely relentless. The other aspect of the book that impressed me was the interweaving of historical events, mainly from the 1960s, without those events overwhelming the story. The first lunar landing, Woodstock, and other events are important narrative threads and certainly important to anyone alive during that time period, but they do not become tangents that forget the characters and situations the reader has been following, unlike some stories set in the '60s that I have read.

This was a little hard to get into because of the letter style writing, but once I figured it out, I really enjoyed it. The second half of the book was really great because I knew the characters better and had grown to really care about what happened to them. I didn't realize that it had so much history in it about the German occupation but it was a softer way to read about some of the horrors of the war and see how it affected so many people.
