The Walking Dead, a black-and-white comic book written and created by author Robert Kirkman, premiered in 2003. Since then, the series has spawned over 80 issues, 13 trade paperback collections, t-shirts, an upcoming video game adaptation, and a television series on AMC. Not bad for a comic book, something that many people believe only children should read. The comic follows the story of Rick Grimes, a police officer from rural Kentucky, who wakes from a coma (trite, I know!) to discover himself one of the few survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Chaos ensues. Society has collapsed. Electricity, running water, cellphones, and the Internet have failed. The way of life Rick (and the readers) knew is gone. Sound familiar? It should. In recent years, Hollywood has produced a number of zombie apocalypse-type films including Zombieland, Quarantine, The Crazies, a remade Dawn of the Dead, and many others. Even Britain has gotten involved, offering the 28 Days Later franchise and the humorous (believe it) Shaun of the Dead. What makes The Walking Dead different is that it isn’t just about the initial zombie outbreak. That time has past. It is now time for the human survivors to band together and forge a new future, one they never envisioned or expected in their wildest nightmares. Where will they find food? How will they keep warm during the winter months? Can they find the antibiotics necessary to cure an illness we would otherwise consider trivial? The Walking Dead, you see, isn’t so much about the living dead, called “Walkers,” preying upon survivors (though horror fans will not be disappointed). The story is about life and how precious it is, about how all of us can take technology, safety, and our loved ones for granted. As the comic claims, “In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living.” Like my post on Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, I encourage skeptical readers and those who do not read comics or the horror genre to give The Walking Dead a fair try. Start with the trade paperback Days Gone Bye (artwork featured), a collection of the first six issues of the comic series. You could be thrilled to discover something you never expected to enjoy. Note: Do not be mislead by the fact that this is a comic book. It is NOT for children. Very adult content abounds.

Hmm... I read this in the same month that I read a book about the Queen. So, electic is a fair statement for March. Gosh - let me gush out a review over HST. Or not. What I will say though is how the mystique of the angels found its way into popular culture - growing up in NZ, whenever we'd see motorcyclists on the road, Dad would prohibit us from looking at them, in case they kicked the doors in. That fear can be traced to a third hand story about a guy in a cadillac mentioned briefly in the bowels of this book. I'm grooving on HST due to Ryan Potts; a chappie not of my generation who's tilting my head into new literary directions.

China is cool and has a lot of amazing old history. The author of this book is a bit arrogant sounding. His writing is interesting; making the book read quickly.

A Devastatingly Stunning And Hardcore Dose of Reality I was ten years old the day that I first picked up this book. Dopefiend was the first novel that I read by Donald Goines and it captivated me. As messed up as it is to say, I recognized the world that Donald Goines writes about with such honesty and skill. It says something about Donald Goines' awesome talent that he created such on-point characters and painted, with his words, such vivid pictures. The main characters are people that I saw on my street corner or hanging out in front of my building. The junkie fever is the manic look that I would see in the eyes of people who looked at my possessions and calculate how much they could sell them for. The drug den was the house that I would cross the street to avoid when walking to and from school. I loved the fact that there is a romantic (I use that term VERY loosely) relationship at the heart of this novel. It illustrates the unhealthy attachment of drug addicts. It also shows the way that someone who is not addicted to drugs can follow a drug addict into that web. Also, this is the life of a junkie that I've always seen. There's no glamour, no fame, no money, nothing shiny about the life these characters are living. These are not rock stars who can go to rehab and get clean. These are not suburban pill poppers going to clubs and raves. The characters in this book are living a dirty, desparate, infected, bloody and twisted version of life. Donald Goines was a wildly talented author whose work I think should be read by everyone, especially other authors no matter what genre they write in. He brought home a gritty reality and he did it brilliantly. His books are a must read.

This is easily my most favorite book of all time. J.R.R. Tolkien created a world that captivated my teenage and early young adult years as I invested time reading the book following the release of first movie. I completely immersed myself for several years into getting to know the book better as I wrote fanfiction based around it rather than the movie and formed many friendships due to a mutual love. Thank you, Tolkien, for many years of enjoyment from your masterpiece.

For some reason going into this, I thought it was going to be a lighthearted love story. It wasn't. McEwan has a way of bringing you into the mind of his characters, which in this case make very unpleasant bedfellows. In it there is a fascinating and thorough examination of how much things change in a moment, beyond what we ever plan or expect.

One of the best cookbooks I have ever encountered. The authors took the time to provide meaningful tips and offer additional explanations/information that make the recipes easier to follow and improve technique.
