Great book. Ifill explores the issues clearly and explains cogently. She responds to a lot of the wonderings I've had in the past year or so about race and politics and where we are now. Excellent book, very well written.

كتاب أنثوي بإمتياز .. سأعود لأكتب عنه بالتفصيل إن شاء الله ------ كتاب خاص بالفتيات هذا مارددته في كل صفحة .. عدد قليل من الكتب يستطيع أن يمس الأنثى الموجودة بداخلي، باعتبار أن قرائتي للروايات قليلة، ولا أميل للعاطفية منها، لذا فعبارتي مقبولة حينما أتحدث عن هذا الكتاب الذي مسني كثيراً، رغم الإختلافات الثقافية والدينية طبعا! كان الكتاب مقترحاً من العزيزة منى المهدي لبدء مناقشة جماعية للكتاب، لولا اقتراحها لما قرأته إلا بعد مدة طويلة ربما، لست عادة ممن يهتم بقوائم الكتب الأكثر مبيعاً، لدي قائمتي الخاصة، هكذا أحدث نفسي دائما، لكن ماكل حديث تسوله نفسك يكون صحيحاً، هذه المرة كان حديث النفس خائباً بالنسبة لي .. بداية لفت انتباهي قدرة ليز على الوضوح والشفافية، الكتابة عن كل هواجسها ومخاوفها وأفكارها الجنونية، والضعيفة، و العاجزة، و القوية، بكل تصنيفاتها بهذه القدرة الفائقة من الشفافية كانت مذهلة، خصوصا عندما أتذكر أنها أتت من أنثى تعيش في دول تدفع نحو المساواة التامة مع الرجل، بالتالي توضيح تقلبات مزاج أنثى، وتردد أفكارها وحيرتها، وأيضا بعضا من سلوكها، مما يعني أنها لا تساوي الرجل، يبدو شجاعة أيضاً ..! أن تقف مرة وقفة صادقة مع نفسك، وتسألها ماذا تريدين يا نفسي من الحياة؟ هل ما أنا فيه يناسبني؟ هل موقعي صحيح؟ أم انني على الطريق الخطأ! أن تملك القدرة على تقدير مايناسبك، وتوضيح خياراتك في الحياة، أو حتى البحث عنها، أن تقف في منتصف الطريق بشجاعة، ملتفتا لما مضى، و أن تقرر إيقاف المسير لأنه يؤدي لنتيجة واضحة وآمنة، لكنها ببساطة لاتناسبك! ليست لك! أمر يتطلب شجاعة كبيرة .. كبيرة جداً .. ليقوم بها أي شخص، ليس فقط معرفة ماتريد، بل المضي والسعي له والمغامرة بالوضع الاجتماعي الجيد، والمنزل الفاخر، والكثير .. أمر آخر تطرقت له وهو حيرتها بأن هل ماترغب فيه تستحقه أو لا؟ وحوارها مع ذاتها حول الفكرة، وعبارة امها لها بأن المرأة عادة تربى على أنها لا تستحق الكثير من الحياة، لذا فهي تقلل مما تستحقه! هذه مشكلة أنثوية بإمتياز، وإن كانت انسانية عامة، لكنها تغلب بين النساء، عندما يحبها أحدهم فهي يغشى عليها من الفرحة، و تفكر بأن هذا كثير عليها لذا تركض نحو اتباعه وتخشى ابتعاده وتصبح شخصا يشبهه (كليز)، تقبل بأي عمل بلا شروط، وقليلاً ماتضع الفتيات شروطها في مقابلات العمل، و تقبل بأي شيء غالباً، و الكثير من الأمثلة، تضعها الظروف الاجتماعية والتنشئة للوصول لهذا التقليل من الذات والقدرات، ولست متأكدة من الأسباب! أعرف أن تجربتها تملك تميزاً نتيجة انها تنتمي لمجتمع غربي مختلف تماماً، لكنها ذكرت بأنها تملك عائلة متماسكة ومترابطة، وأيضا دائرة من الأصدقاء الداعمين، لكن مع ذلك مساحة الحرية الفردية المتوفرة لديها، وتوافق بعض الظروف مثل موافقة عملها، جائت في صالحها .. :) أبرر لنفسي بأني أخاف أن أفكر كثيراً، ثم أعرف ما أريد تحديداً، و أكتشف بأني لن أحصل عليه نتيجة ظروف عدة فأصاب بالإحباط، لذا شخصياً لست راغبة بالمزيد من معرفة الذات .. عجز المسيحية عن إكمال الجانب الروحي لدى المسيحين في عالم اليوم ملفت! هناك مسافة كبيرة بين الشعوب الغربية والمسيحية، أخبرتنا ان صديقتها تسجد لكنها لا يمكن أن تذهب للكنيسة بحثها وتساؤلها عن الرب، عن قوة غيبية روحية كبرى، تستمد منها العطف والقوة وتعبدها وتستجيب لها هل الكل يحتاج للصلاة والطعام والحب؟ بالطبع لا الكل يحتاج للحصول على حصص متكافئة مما يرغب فيه ومما يناسب إحتياجاته الروحية، والجسدية، والنفسية أيضا! لا أعرف هل السفر أم الطعام أم المعرفة أم العلم أم الشغف أم العبادة أم الحب أم الالتزام أم الحرية أم الانطلاق .. هو مايوصلني إليّ! السؤال كيف سأبحث عني؟ ليز لم تكتب دليلاً سياحياً، و لا كتاب رحلات، رغم استطرادها في التفاصيل والوصف، و ربما هذا طلب الناشر، أو كونها صحفية تكتب مواضيع سياحية، لكنها عرضت تجربتها الخاصة، ومحاولتها للتشافي للآخرين، ليس لأجل تقليدها والذهاب لايطاليا والهند وبالي، وليس بالطعام و الصلاة والحب! بل بما يحتاجه كل فرد منا! وبما يريده فعلاً! هل كانت السعادة ماوجدته ليز؟ لا أعتقد، بل هي وجدت سلاماً داخلياً، وجدت نفسها، بحت عن الإتزان والتوازن والشفاء فحققته بطريقتها، لكن هذا خيط السعادة وليس السعادة كلها الجميل في سعادتها أنها وصلت لسعادتها الخاصة وليست سعادة الآخرين المستعارة، إنما وصفة سعادة تخصها وحدها .. الخلاصة: عليكنّ بأن تحببن أنفسكنّ أولا، كوني مركز حياتك، الآخرين يدورون حولها، لا تجعلي أحداً مركز حياتك، قالتها صديقتي مريم أخرجي من تحبين من قلبك، ضعيهم في كفيكِ كما قالت ليز لا تنتظروا أميراً ينقذكم كما في القصص الخرافية، و لا قوة غيبية تنتشلكم مما أنتم فيه، إنما على الإنسان أن يكون منقذ نفسه بنفسه ذكرني هذا بمقولة لمحمد اقبال "المسلم الضعيف يعتذر بالقضاء والقدر، والمسلم القوي هو قضاء الله وقدره "

Yet another intensely satisfying installment in the series. It's one of the books of the series least capable of standing by itself, both because it is intricately bound up with nine previous books full of characters and events, and because, as with the rest of the Aubrey-Maturin books, it functions much more as a chapter within a longer saga than as an individual novel. The pacing is certainly much different than one would normally expect from a novel; it takes them 200 pages to leave port in order to give chase to the Norfolk, and the denouement is unexpected and rather abrupt. I still found myself enjoying it immensely; I would have done so if all the novel had done was to reacquaint me with Jack and Stephen, who are like old friends at this stage. The quality of the writing is fine enough, though, that I could enjoy this book for other reasons than solely the fact that it is another book in the A-M series. The period detail is as exacting and as precise as ever, as are the descriptions of the various cultures with which the crew cross paths, and I really do appreciate that. The dialogue is gorgeously textured, and all too often extremely funny. I found myself laughing over several parts this morning on the bus into college, which did frighten the woman next to me somewhat. I particularly enjoyed the method by which Stephen was awoken after his concussion, which was more than a little surreal, and yet so utterly Stephen. One of the most interesting parts of the book for me was comparing it mentally to the plot of the Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World movie, because that is how I originally came to the book series. They really are nothing alike; for all that M&C:tFSotW is a very fine movie indeed, it is much more typically Hollywood in tone and content than the book is. One is a chase movie; one is a book which records a voyage, however exciting and however dull that may be at times. They're both creations which I love, just in different ways. Also in connection with the movie, I was very entertained by the fact that in the movie, the crew of the Surprise are chasing a French frigate, but in the book, they're chasing an American ship. I'm sure that change wasn't occasioned by commercial bias at all.

i think that this book was really good there were many different qualities that it had that made this book one of my favorites. but one of the things which i really like about this book is the story to it it is about how this young girl gets raped and she dies her family has to recover form it. i really did learn a lot from reading this book it was really did make me sad. this book the story line is so amazing i really did like it it was very good and i mean this girl had her while life ahead of her she would have been able to do anything that she put her mind to do but her entire future was thrown away all for one mans pleasure i would say that Alice really did get her message out in this book i think that many people were grossed out but they were also touched by this book, i know i was this book offered a lot and i think that it is a very great book there is many things that i loved a bout it the suspense was on key it was fast paced it also really did keep me guessing this book was really amazing out was a very unique book that i really did like it was a really good read for me i didn't really see anything wrong with this book it had many different unique qualities to this book this book was very touching and expiring i haven't really seen a book like this one i haven't really seen a book that has such intensity as it does in this one it was really good and nice to read this book i think that this book definitely deserved four stars it was good really fun to read and definitely great to know the price of what the people in this world do and how it can affect other peoples lives

My favorite character is a black boy named Mitchel, I like him because has a stronge sense of self value. He realizes taht just because he is black doesn't make him worth less.
