I *loved* this story. I liked that the MC knew what it was like to be hurt, to be bullied. That she wasn't perfect and beautiful. I believe she describes her family as round, but she doesn't necessarily have a totally negative feel to her body shape. There is a point when she's tempted to wish to be skinny (she was nicknamed Fairy Fat all through school), but she realizes how superficial that would be. I like that she and her mom look at rounder figures as grandeur, rather than spending all her time wishing to be thin. In a society so caught up with weight, this was a refreshing change. I loved the Small Persons With Wings. They were small, sometimes annoying, and deeply flawed, but they weren't all that different from real people. The ending came a little quick for me, but otherwise, *loved* it. Contains mild swearing.

I LOVED this book! It's one of those rare books that is so good, so enjoyable, that once I'd finished it, I didn't want to read anything else for a couple of days; there was almost a sense of loss that the book was over. Jessica Day George beautifully fleshes out the original fairy tale, adding details without losing the soul of the fairy tale. Just wonderful.

It was so hard for me to read this book with fresh eyes, given that I've seen the movie based on it several times (Smoke Signals). Without having seen the movie, I think I would have felt pretty ungrounded in these little snippets of stories, but I guess that's sort of the point. This isn't supposed to hang together in any logical order; it reads more like an ethnography than a novel, with nostalgic musings on alcohol, racism, and that annoying kid on the playground who's always trying to tell you random made-up stories you don't particularly want to hear. There's a nice touching section in the middle that reads something like that chapter of Everything is Illuminated about the single father and the newborn son he randomly adopts.

Excellent Newbery winner! I wanted to rename Fred, Rontu, after I read this one. It is about a girl who is raised on an island. Her tribe gets taken away on a boat to the US but she is left behind alone. She survives and takes care of herself.
