Richard II, King of England is a much maligned monarch. History has not treated him well and his role as the last Plantagenet king of England is a prelude to the War or Roses and the establishment of the Tudor dynasty. During his reign, Richard faced one of the first recorded peasant revolt in England as well as constant in fighting amongst his uncles, the sons of Edward III, one of the greatest English kings. After quelling the revolt and marrying Anne of Bohemia, Richard ruled for eight peaceful years until the death of his wife. With her ability to calm the king removed, Richard starts to take his vengeance on those who have failed him in the past. I read a lot of British history and while this is a fictional account, I must say that the author did a marvelous job of bringing Richard II to life. All of his decisions, be they good or bad, are presented with a plausible explanation. The author takes you into the mind of Richard II and showed you not an evil, vengeful man but simply a man who took the throne too young and had no one he could truly trust (besides his wife) to help him rule. His own instincts to rule as a benevolent king were constantly thwarted by his cousin Henry (later Henry IV) and his uncles, who were content to run the country as they saw fit, trotting out Richard only when immediate danger was present. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in early English history and the love story between the King and his first wife is deftly handled, without the typical sentimental drivel that many stories succumb to in order to reach a broader “romance” reader.

This volume is worth reading just for the first part, "The Last Castle," which tells of the last ship out of the the Homelands, and the tragic story behind it. Very very well done.

This is a wonderful book, told from the viewpoint of an autistic teenager. The father, as seen through the boys eyes, breaks your heart. Great book.

It is challenging to write a review of this book. It's hard to say I 'liked' it because it was about a pretty horrible series of events and behaviors. However, the story was definitely thought-provoking and engaging, while involving the reader in the varied lives and thoughts of the Price family from the United States, and their time in the Congo. Kingsolver has an engaging writing style, and weaves history into her fictional account of cultural insensitivity, coming of age in a foreign country, clashes of cultural values and needs, and the impact of all of these on the individual lives and futures of a family of four girls and their parents who go to the Congo as missionaries. This book will definitely lend itself to some very interesting conversations during book club!

This is one of those very few books where, in reading one can be transported to entirely new states of belief. If you are open to it, you can have the entirety of your life changed.

This book took some time for me to adjust to the "grim reaper" angle... but once I did, it was totally worth it. I remember towards the end (maybe I was hormonal) I could barely read through all the tears.

I'm only halfway through this book (just in time for earth day!) but I love it already. Sustainability is an important principle of landscape architecture, and I try to incorporate it in my work every day, but this book gives helpful ways that you can practice sustainability at home.easy things like eating organic, avoiding all exposure to certian types of plastics (NEVER PUT ANYTHING PLASTIC IN THE MICROWAVE!!), drinking tap water instead of bottled water, using makeup with natural ingredients. It's another one of those eye-opening books that makes you think about what's actually IN the food and products you use everyday, and how this is bad for you and bad for the planet. (he tells of workers on a farm who have to wear rubber boots and masks to protect them from the harmful pesticides they're spraying on the lettuce we EAT!!) It makes you realize, we have all this fancy technology and modern conveniences, but what is the ultimate cost?

As a teenager, I found the writing style slightly difficult to understand. This was my first Kazuo Ishiguro, and I plan on reading Never Let Me Go next. I hope it is easier to understand. I really enjoyed the plot. I actually tried to give up reading it a few times (because I'm kind of slow) but every time I was itching to know more, and picked it up again and continued reading. It was brilliantly written. The way Ishiguro wrote it was definitely intriguing and very compelling. The ending was strangely quite anticlimactic and befuddling! It caught me off guard. If you're feeling like I had felt, reading the book review(s) below might help you out. :) http://www.unpublishedguy.com/Writing...
