Jhumpa Lahiri is such a beautiful writer. I don't especially care for short stories, so I give her four stars for winning me over with these eight tales. (The only one I didn't especially care for was "Nobody's Business.") I thought it a little weird that Part 1 contains five standalone tales, while Part 2 contains three interwoven stories focusing on two key characters. It makes me wonder if the author just compiled a bunch of stuff she'd written so she could publish another book. I also detected some similarities between characters and settings, but Lahiri knows her craft; her writing is like a gentle boat ride across a calm sea--until lightning strikes. I have come to measure my ratings by how willing and eager I am to pick up a book whenever the opportunity presents itself (vs. slogging through, sighing, feeling like it's a chore just to finish). Unaccustomed Earth was an enjoyable and engrossing read.

The story of Eve, that's the subtitle. It could be said it is the The Story of Eve, the story of women. I could not put this book down. I soaked in the words of Havah's story. I felt a kinship with her, felt her guilt, her sorrows, her joy and her grief. I cried when she called in a broken woman's voice, 'Adonai' and didn't receive an answer. How much more grievous it had t have been for her after talking to God and hearing from Him in a way none of us have, to lose that would have crushed most of us. Yet, God made her and Adam strong, equipped them with the strengths and knowledge needed to begin our civilization. Tosca Lee has taken Genesis's very short chapters about Eve and filled in the missing story of what might have been. While it is a work of fiction the possible reality that life might have been much like this for Eve causes one to pause and to think. This woman blamed for the downfall for our sin, sorrows, and discomforts was real. She was a survivor and a daughter of God. And having read Havah I understand so much more of what was lost. This book and Demon: a Memoir, Lee's other book will not be leaving my personal library. Both are books that can be reread knowing a new perspective will be gained.
I loved this book, too.

SO I made the mistake of watching a 'B movie' version of this before reading the original. About the only thing the movie got right was the big reveal at the end. But I kind of wish the original had been a bit tighter and focused.

Amazing book, thought not as amazing as The Sight, I still gave it five stars. I love Fell's point of view. While I was reading The Sight, I really didn't care for him, but this book changed my mind.

I read this during my dystopian kick in high school. Sooooooo good. I re-read it recently and it's just as good as it was the first time.

David Gets in Trouble by David Shannon is a great book for children who are an only child or the youngest in the family who are striving for attention. This book can teach about forgiveness, guilt, and right from wrong. David knows what he is doing is wrong everytime because he comes up with an excuse such as, "But she likes it" or "I didn't mean to!"

Uyemoto is a decent writer, but Go is not a strong piece of work. Although the protagonist, Wil, is supposed to be my age, I couldn't identify with her. Apparently Wil is bipolar and on lithium after a traumatic break-up and an abortion, but I wasn't convinced by Uyemoto's writing that Wil was really dealing with all those issues. Wil's thoughts and speech seemed very superficial. However, her family is full of interesting characters who are well-drawn. The best parts of the book are anecdotes about the lives of Wil's relatives. Unless you're really interested in novels about Japanese-American families, I'd skip this one.

If you're a man, I recommend you read this book for the rock solid insight into male-female relations it provides. Then go chop down a tree or rebuild an engine or something to regain the manhood that you've lost by reading this book.
