We both read and saw a student performance of this play in high school. Since they also had us read and see Inherit the Wind I presume there was some concern among members of the English and Theatre departments as regards the abridgment of the Bill of Rights as had occurred during the HUAC and Senator Joe McCarthy heydays during their own student years. Whatever, both of them were pretty good and I hope kids are still reading them since the Bush years have shown that our rights are never secure.

I have a weird relationship this book. I didn't exactly enjoy it while reading it, and found myself thinking the guy seriously needed an editor (but I will admit as avid readers go, I am pretty easily distracted). BUT since I finished reading it, I can't stop thinking about the characters. That's usually my yardstick for how good a book is--how long I think about it after I finished it--and holy balls does this novel take the cake.

3 1/2 stars In this book we return to Cedar Cove and pick up where 8 Sandpiper Way and A Cedar Cove Christmas left off. Sheriff Troy Davis is lamenting the fact he let his first love go for the second time. Faith Beckwith may still love Troy, but he let her go and she has no intention of giving him another chance. This is supposed to be a story about Faith and Troy, but it seems that all the other characters from Cedar Cove take over the story. Olivia, Grace, and Charlotte of course play a part in things (what is Cedar Cove without them?). Then there is Christie, Teri Polgar's sister, and her somewhat relationship with James Wilbur. Oh, and of course Teri and Bobby. Then there are Bruce and Rachel, newly married and dealing with his daughter, Jolene. Mack and Mary Jo have a HUGE storyline and setup the next book (1022 Evergreen). It seemed to me that this book was more about the next book than this one itself. I almost got lost with all the storylines and there was very little resolution. Usual for the "continuing saga of Cedar Cove," but this seemed excessive. I also found that Macomber seemed to peddle her A Cedar Cove Cookbook a bit in the book. It was repeatedly mentioned that Charlotte gathered recipes for Justine's new tea room. Plus, when she bakes something, it almost felt like a recipe. Did it really help the plot to know that Charlotte knitted for 45 minutes while waiting for something in the oven? I didn't feel that it did. Overall, this was a bit of a disappointment. Troy and Faith barely had a story here and the ones that were front and center were left hanging. So, here's to waiting for the next book in the series...

Gostei, mas à medida que o fim se aproximava, fiquei um pouco desmotivada. Achei o livro estranho, interessante mas estranho. Gostei das descrições da vida em Halemni, costumes e valores, do tradicionalismo da Meroula e do amor incondicional, simples e sincero de Xan. Desmotivaram-me as "guerras" entre a Olivia e a Kitty, as extensas auto-reflexões da Kitty e os radicalismos da Olivia. O final também podia ter sido muito melhor. Achei o final da Kitty muito exotérico e descabido.
