My favorite book ever. Well-written, exciting, great plot, lots of action. It's a little long but it's a quick read and well worth your time. I've read this book at least three or four times and I never get tired of it.

This is just a fun reference guide to a nearly endless list of imagined places. It sticks pretty strictly to literature and mythology (because, seriously, the editors would be researching it forever otherwise), so no Fortress of Solitude or Galaxy Far, Far Away. You can't have everything. I spent hours flipping through it when I first got it and still do on occasion. There aren't many places where you can easily flip back and forth between compendiums of knowledge on the Land of Oz and Middle-Earth!

I liked this book, it was a good quick read. I enjoyed reading Penny's story unfold after she died, and it left me wanting to look under the couch and collect all the spare change! I gave it three stars because it was just good, it didn't wow me, and definatly not a best seller.

I learned a lot, which is one reason I adore Sarah Vowell. Alas, the lack of chapter breaks (or even page breaks for that matter) lent itself to some confusion and lack of organization. (It didn't help that I went through the book at a snail's pace.) There was a LOT more history, a lot less personal anecdotal hilarity. Wah. I wanted more of her nephew, Owen! I want Sarah to be my aunt.

Sinceramente, me esperaba mucho más de este libro. Hay demasiadas casualidades imposibles y creo que al final tanto forzar las cosas termina provocando en el lector la sensación de que, más que una novela coherente, hay tres o cuatro relatos cortos (el joven universitario-mendigo, el excéntrico millonario, la historia del obeso profesor de universidad...) unidos por un débil (debilísimo) hilo narrativo (se supone que la búsqueda de los orígenes familiares de M.S., tema que, dicho sea de paso, a mí personalmente no me resulta demasiado interesante). Muchos de los personajes están tremendamente estereotipados (sobre todo los femeninos... la misteriosa chica asiática que viste con kimono...uffff...) y otros directamente me resultan inevitablemente antipáticos (no termino de cogerle el punto a M.S.). Aunque el estilo es apropiado (un poco pedante y pretencioso, pero se supone que es un relato en primera persona del pretencioso y pedante M.S., ¿no?) y no resulta pesado de leer, en conjunto este libro está bastante por debajo de mis expectativas.

This my second book by Kiran Desai.. she has a way with words and creating very unique and intriguing characters. Her endings also have the same flair but they can leave you feeling unfulfilled..She is also very funny.. overall a good book, but not amazingly meaningful
