fantastic character work. gorgeous, vivid, poignant prose. most characters are brilliant, though i fail to understand the purpose of Beth. I think I would prefer her as a figment Gwynn's imagination. superb world-building. unfortunately there's not much by way of plot. when i was about half-way into the book, i thought to myself, now, this book could benefit from some serious editing. what i meant was that no matter how fascinating the characters and peculiar the world, there's just no reason to meander from one scorched dusty landscape to another ad nauseam. it felt as if the author was too in love with the scenes in her head to part with any of them, no matter how redundant. but once i got to the end and--practically--nothing changed by way of plot development, i decided that i didn't mind meandering all that much. it was a thoroughly enjoyable read, and i'd want to say that i'd love to see more of this world, but i must admit that endlessly dragging plotlessness could be an exercise in severe frustration.

I wish the cover looked like this when I read it at 13 years old.

It’s a fascinating story, one that Hochschild summarized in an article for Mother Jones which is available on-line at http://www.motherjones.com/news/featu... — if you like that, you’ll like the rest too. A few things that stood out to me were the sophistication of the public relations, lobbying and activist techniques both of the anti-slavery activists and of the slavery industry. In many respects, the way the abolitionist struggle was fought and fought against seemed as though it could be happening today with few changes.

Really a great read, well-written, concise, and spot-on. Bageant grew up in the rural south (Winchester, Virginia) and knows from rednecks. He's not disingenuous at all, not a snobbish elite looking outside-in. He wants to love these people, like his brother, who's a pastor still living in the town he grew up in, or the mooks in the dive bar where he shoots the bull. In the book, he goes back to find that what the world knows as squabbling Scots-Irish white trash has gotten dumber, fatter, and deeper in debt. And boy do they loves them some Jesus. Each of the book's chapters deals with one particular aspect of rural poverty or red-state politics; the chapter on mortgage debt is really painful to read. (Especially after having just seen the documentary "Maxed Out.") One predatory lender claims that he can "get a ham sandwich a loan if it has a dollar to make a downpayment." I find his chapter on gun ownership to be extremely sympathetic. Almost everyone there owns a gun, most of them still have heirloom guns that their families used to hunt with. And the majority of them still hunt, and no one owns handguns. Another great quote: "Handguns are for pussies." Why would some big-city elitist want to take that away? Damn right. And then, of course, there's the Millenialist/End-Times/Charismatic Christianity. If you can stomach that chapter ...

Surprisingly more adventure than the first in the series, I will be in wait for several years for the follow up.

One of my favorites: shifts between two single points of view, although the narration is 3rd person. A beautiful story of community and healing. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed this look into American life in the late '70s/early '80s. I also liked the relationships between the women and how they helped each other through real-life difficulties. However, I didn't feel like Taylor was very developed as a character. She just accepts this baby without any thought? It is also interesting to see that the issue of immigration was a problem then, as it is now, and to look at the moral implications that come up as well. One line that has stuck with me is that Americans tend to think that people in other countries deserve what they have, or don't have. That's probably true to some extent, but not always. Still, it made me think about my own views and get to know myself a little better.

I liked the Midwife's Apprentice so much that I bought this one for my niece. great for a 5-8th grade girl. Histoical fiction, strong heroin/main character.
