I feel very confused. I want to hate this book and yet I don't.

I had high hopes for this novel, but it didn't turn out to be as good as I wanted it to.

My alma mater was hosting an alumni event in San Francisco. I attended one once before in London, England. Although I didn’t find the English reunion particularly inspiring, the title of the book being showcased at this West Coast event was intriguing. I thought it might have the potential to help me come to grips with the phenomenon encircling me in my professional life, one in which ‘strategy’ has become synonymous with ‘creativity.’ It seems that if you don’t come up with something different, you won’t be around for long, regardless of your industry of choice. After all, how much can a broken wheel be reinvented before even the wheel decides to give up? Tested ideas are based on yesterday afternoon’s industry standards, and expectations change wildly overnight. I wonder, is there a formula that can set free the original ideas? I’m not one for math, but even I would consider memorizing that one. Here's my full review of the book: http://www.uncustomarybookreview.com/...

In addition to being a compelling story about two young men growing up in New York during the rise of the comic book in American culture, Michael Chabon's novel is wonderfully written. I am always affected by well-written works and this book has restored my faith in modern writing. So often, at least in my experience, modern novels are written in a banal style or at least a style that doesn't quite have the pizzaz of someone like Dickens or Melville for example. It is not often today that I find a novel that forces me to pause and re-read a sentence just for the thrill it sends through me. This book did that on occassion.

I've loathed writing a review for this book, because I don't think I could do it justice. The book was quite an annoying read. The first half was (seriously) taking college students' responses to the question "Why should anyone believe anything at all?" and giving the author's two-bits on why those reasons are correct or incorrect. Basically, it covered the first week of a freshman course on epistemology. While claiming to deal with post-modern thought, it really avoids the issue by a vague rejection of the system that doesn't deal with the issues at all. The second half was perhaps even more disappointing. It was a very broad scope of Christian apologetics, but it really lacked any solid rebuttals of common attacks on Christian faith. In his own eyes the author thought he was making other worldviews look silly, but in actuality he was only making himself look that way. I kept trying to approach the book from the perspective of an atheist, agnostic, or adherent to a different religion, and I found it easy to refute or write off most or all of the author's claims. The only defense I could give for the book is that it was written in 1995 when Christian evidentialist apologetics were at their peak and more modern forms of apologetics were not widely recognized as being valuable. A book that I would recommend more is the author's "The Universe Next Door," which gives fair analysis (if not evaluation) of various worldviews. That book is what interested me in this current book.

Okay it was total soap opera but worth it. i loved the drama of this book. I think readers who chose to rate it as a 1 are more uncomfortable with the concept of racial identity than that of the story.

An enjoyable read but not nearly as good as "A Fire upon the Deep", mainly because, for me, the scope of the narrative and action was much more constrained; space opera needs scope and "epicness" which this novel does not have. The characters were familiar, the setting was all on one world stuck in the low yet slowly improving tech "slow zone". So much of the novelty and sense of wonder the preceding book had wasn't here in this novel. The tale, mainly about political shenanigans, wasn't particularly novel, to me. It was ok but I wouldn't want to reread it except maybe as a refresher when the inevitable sequel shows up (assuming this book does well enough financially of course). The Blight menace of the prior book was barely touched on but they are still coming albeit at "mere" light speed, and one knows a future sequel will deal with what happens with them when they arrive. I hold hopes that tale will better satisfy my space operatic cravings.

I was turned off by how polemic & preachy this book seemed. The information was interesting, though.
