my first book by Frederic Beigbeder, a famous jetsetter. Loved the style and the story (auto-bio??) of this poor rich lazy guy who ends up with standard couple problems... his view of marriage is quite acurate and right... to me ;-)

This is another one of my childhood favorites. I can read this book over and over again and still find myself crying. I have read all the books that came out after that (many don't know that the story of these 4 young girls continues in many more books). I don't read many classics, but this one definitely transcends time. Highlight - Louisa May Alcott was a big fan of women's rights. Her characters were very strong women, especially Jo, who ends up running her own business and never considered marriage as her only option in life (as did so many women in that time). I really do like the fact that she made sure to test society's expectation of women at that time to be totally dependent upon man.

Ok, so this book wasn't Mrs. McDaniel's best, but it was still good enough to read. It tended to be slightly on the tacky side in some parts and there were quite a few cliche moments. I got tired of all the kissing and thought Julie was a little to possessive and clingy. I was also not a fan of the way she treated mother for 9/10ths of the book. Luke was a bit too much at times, but I did like him. And, as always, it was a sad ending, which covers over a multitude of sins.

After reading 'Jessica's Guide to Dating on to Dating on the Dark Side' when it first came out I went to Beth Fantaskey's website to find out if there would be a sequel. It had sounded like there wouldn't be. I enjoyed the first book so I'm so glad to know there WILL be a second.

I thought this to be an extremely powerful book. It was a study of the quote that "absolute power corrupts absolutely." The novel, an historical fiction, follows the career of the dictator, Trujillo, of the Dominican Republic. He was a man of little morals and one so corrupt and demonic, that his ruling sent shivers down the spine of the reader. He entrenched himself as the political leader with the whip of executions and absolute rule. He was denounced by many including the United States and he Catholic Church, but refused categorically to step down. Focusing and weaving a tale within the historical framework, we learn of Trujillo's government and his family. They are all filled with the concepts of self and the leader is diabolical in his ability to read people. People plan his assassination in the hopes that the military would assume control and the country would be rid of "the goat" as he was nicknamed because of his sexual appetites. Llosa builds a compulsive story using a fictional family particularly in the figure of Urania Cabral and her famous father, who was a member of Trujillo's inner circle. Urania's return to the Dominican Republic after thirty years opens up the story and brings us into contact with the Dominican Republic of the late fifties and sixties. Urania has a powerful story to tell of her experiences with her father and the reason for her hatred of him as well as the dictator. Through sets of monologues and talks with her family, Urania relates the happenings of her county as well as the ones that touch her young life. Llosa sets up and maintains the trauma in the environment in which the people lived within this country of fear and retributions. The reader will be "blown away" by the portrayal of Trujillo, the Generalissimo, who while maniacal, holds himself to various obsessions, self discipline, obsessive cleanliness, punctuality, and of course sex. Long though this book is, Llosa presents a man, his family, his government, and his people with tight words and gruesome doings. It was an excellent novel of the workings os political intrigue headed by a monster.

The 1987 Newbery Medal winner Kind of an interesting tale for younger readers in which all the characters (even the king, I think) learn a lesson. Loved the illustrations by Peter Sis. Liked the use of few "made-up" words by the author.

Real perspectives on being parents, choosing to have kiddos, etc. Interesting to hear all sides of the decision/lifestyle. Very...informative. Great writing.

¡Muy malo! A totally unnecessary read. Poorly written. Very poorly drawn. I am not a big Dave Cockrum fan, but his artwork looked very rushed for this. He didn't even try to do one of his more creative paneling experiments. This is 15+ years after Giant Size X-Men, and his art hasn't changed a bit. In this case it looks worse. Kinda sad. If you like the Starjammers this book will likely disappoint, but may still be worth a read. It does not tell an important story. It just gives you a little more detail on a few of the characters. And you might be happier filling it in with your own imagination.

Kesinlikle tavsiye ederim!
