Güzel Davranış Serisi: Buzda Şaka - Özür Dilemek TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Tarafından yazılmış kitap Tarafından: Çocuk Gezegeni

Ahhhh, finally! It has been so long since I've read an awesome book that I almost forgot what it was like. One of the most common complaints I heard about this book before picking it up was that it's too long. That's a ridiculous complaint. If someone gives you a huge slice of delicious chocolate cake, you say thank you and eat it. If they give you a huge slice of stale and moldy fruitcake, then you can gripe about it. Yes, this is almost 600 pages, and yes, I can envision not needing all of those pages to tell the story properly, but who cares? Do you really "need" chocolate cake? No, but it's freaking awesome, so shut up and eat it! (Forgive the anger and drawn-out food metaphors; I am, after all, 2 days past my due date). That is not to say the book is perfect. I have my issues, which I will save to rant about until book club (lucky gals;). But none of its flaws are so egregious that they diminished my enjoyment of the book as a whole. Things I like about it: It's original without being weird and it's literary without being dense. It's a morality tale without being sappy or self-righteous. It has great characters and a compelling story that are still believable, despite the fact that there's a definite supernatural element. For book nerds, you'll appreciate all the literature nods (Jungle Book, Hamlet, Odyssey, Oedipus), but you can enjoy it without that. For dog lovers, you'll probably love the book even more, but again, probably not necessary for you to like it. More than anything, my measure of a good book is that I'm sad when it's over. I found myself parceling out the last 100 pages to make it last longer. Now where is this guy's Pulitzer? If Junot Diaz gets one for that big slice of stale fruitcake called Oscar Wao, then David Wroblewski needs two. All he's got so far is an Oprah's Book Club sticker, a dubious honor that sells your book yet steals your chances at being taken seriously. And why it's an OBC book is kind of a mystery to me. No one gets raped and there are no minorities being oppressed. Sorry, Oprah, I'm only picking on you because I'm trying to channel my anger away from my womb. Plus you're kinda dumb. One important tip that I have though: if you do pick this up, DO NOT read the inside flap of the book. It gives away too much of the story, most of which does not happen until the second half of the book. For whatever magical reason, I did not read the flap first, but only turned to it casually when I was about 3/4 through the book. My reaction was, "Wow. I'm really glad I didn't know that in advance." I think it might have made me impatient and changed my experience. Stupid publishers. Probably in cahoots with Oprah.
