Dilly dilly picalilly. Tell me something very silly. There was a chap, his name was Bert. He ate the buttons off his shirt. Silly Bert.

Despite giving a comprehensive account of the mid to late 70s DC music scene, this book is (as can be expected) more or less dominated by the plight of Ian Mackaye and Dischord Records. No huge surprise, given the title of the book (Or the photographs of two Mackaye bands on the front and back cover out of four pictures total). Nevertheless, the man is my hero so i loved reading this. Lots of great coverage on other well known and lesser known DC or DC-related bands, including the interesting trajectories of HR from Bad Brains and Brian Baker. Overall, very entertaining and inspiring...that is until Mark Anderson blows it by including 5 pages on the significance of Good Charlotte in the afterword. Oh you think I'm joking?

A little slow to start about a cross dressing senior starting at a conservative Florida private school. He makes the mistake of thinking dressing as a ruffly pirate will allow him to practically blend in. Instead it gets him tortured and eventually beat into a coma. The main character is one you will both cheer for and wish he was your bff in high school. Funny and great story even if the ending seems unrealistically happy.

There are a lot of great things in this book, and the message is great, but the author talks about the devil and evil in kind of a cheesy way...a little on the serious religious side, but great messages if you can get past that.

Loved this book. If you're just mildly interested in design and geography and particularly how they've changed the suburbs, it's a fun book. Good book store to find it: Builders Books on 4th Street in Berkeley, one of my favorite spots.

Some of the language in this book is difficult to understand, but the murder mystery was compelling. I'm still not entirely sure how it ended, or why the murderer is who it is or why he did it entirely, but it was interesting to read. Landsman is my kind of detective and his partner, Berko, is just awesome.

I've seen scads of people reading this book on the subway, and I liked the cover (I'll admit I'm a little bit of a cover whore), but the story was like an embryo that never implanted. I couldn't connect with the characters enough to care about what they were doing. I found it a waste of my time. Which was too bad, because I liked the cover...

Ahhhh, finally! It has been so long since I've read an awesome book that I almost forgot what it was like. One of the most common complaints I heard about this book before picking it up was that it's too long. That's a ridiculous complaint. If someone gives you a huge slice of delicious chocolate cake, you say thank you and eat it. If they give you a huge slice of stale and moldy fruitcake, then you can gripe about it. Yes, this is almost 600 pages, and yes, I can envision not needing all of those pages to tell the story properly, but who cares? Do you really "need" chocolate cake? No, but it's freaking awesome, so shut up and eat it! (Forgive the anger and drawn-out food metaphors; I am, after all, 2 days past my due date). That is not to say the book is perfect. I have my issues, which I will save to rant about until book club (lucky gals;). But none of its flaws are so egregious that they diminished my enjoyment of the book as a whole. Things I like about it: It's original without being weird and it's literary without being dense. It's a morality tale without being sappy or self-righteous. It has great characters and a compelling story that are still believable, despite the fact that there's a definite supernatural element. For book nerds, you'll appreciate all the literature nods (Jungle Book, Hamlet, Odyssey, Oedipus), but you can enjoy it without that. For dog lovers, you'll probably love the book even more, but again, probably not necessary for you to like it. More than anything, my measure of a good book is that I'm sad when it's over. I found myself parceling out the last 100 pages to make it last longer. Now where is this guy's Pulitzer? If Junot Diaz gets one for that big slice of stale fruitcake called Oscar Wao, then David Wroblewski needs two. All he's got so far is an Oprah's Book Club sticker, a dubious honor that sells your book yet steals your chances at being taken seriously. And why it's an OBC book is kind of a mystery to me. No one gets raped and there are no minorities being oppressed. Sorry, Oprah, I'm only picking on you because I'm trying to channel my anger away from my womb. Plus you're kinda dumb. One important tip that I have though: if you do pick this up, DO NOT read the inside flap of the book. It gives away too much of the story, most of which does not happen until the second half of the book. For whatever magical reason, I did not read the flap first, but only turned to it casually when I was about 3/4 through the book. My reaction was, "Wow. I'm really glad I didn't know that in advance." I think it might have made me impatient and changed my experience. Stupid publishers. Probably in cahoots with Oprah.

Amazing Gracie is a heart warming story about a deaf almost blind albno great dane named Gracie. The book starts when Gracie is a puppy and goes all the way till the end. It will make you fall in love with this sweet loving dog and make you wish you had a dog just like her. Warning you will need tissue at the end of the book. If you are a dog lover I recommend that you read this book it's truely a heart warming story.
