Read about 60 pages of this one, and I just couldn't get into it. I wasn't interested in the characters, and it was just pretty slow moving. I had to force myself to read that far, so I figured I was better off just marking it as "didn't finish".

This book is something else. At first, I am shocked by the parents, shocked that there are people like that. Then comes a feeling of being shocked at how normal (all but Maureen) the children turned out, and that they had so much love and compassion for their parents. And then following closely on the heels of that I keep wondering, which parent was worse? The father I can almost understand, his issues, while very real seem sort of simple to recognize. The mother on the other hand? I cannot fathom what would drive a woman to act that way. I have to admit to a fair amount of skimming, because I could tell early on that there were certain experiences in her life that I just did not want to have the images in my head for. I got enough of the picture just from skimming those parts. But mostly, I can't believe the ability of this family to forgive, again and again and again.

I've been reading loads of positive reviews for Mia Marlowe's Touch of a Thief in recent times, such that when a dear friend of mine loaned it to me I knew that I had to push it to the top of my 'to read' pile. So glad I did. I'm even tempted to read it again before I have to give it back.

Well, actually I abandoned this book after skipping around trying to get some satisfaction from the story. pffft.

I have a crush on Trent Harris in all his cult-loving geekiness and this book includes some very funny bits and pieces of bizarre Utah trivia. It includes a copy of the Deseret Alphabet that Bob Moss uses in his amazing art. Unfortunately, the book is VERY badly written, but I guess that only adds to the cultiness of it and it's so short it didn't bother me too much.

I remember reading this at school and going to see the stage show at our local theatre many times, all a long long time ago. As a teenager I fell in love with the Lord of the Rings books and read and re-read them, first borrowing from my older sister, then my own copies. I thought I knew the Hobbit, and did not see a reason to pick it up again. Until now. So, the film came out and I went to see it, it was fab but there was alot in there that I wasn't sure of, I knew that Peter Jackson was meant to have added loads in to bulk the slim book into 3 films bit I wasn't sure what. So I decided to go back to my childhood and read a favourite. I wish I hadn't. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the book but I found it lacking. The story was there, it went at a great pace but there was no texture or colour, no depth. I felt that it was like someone was reciting back what they had done that day instead of an all encompassing world, that sweeps you up and takes you somewhere vivid and incredible. Tolkien clearly had an amazing imagination, I just felt it was missing in this story.

The Poisoner's Handbook Penguin Group(USA) Inc, 2010, 375pp.,$25.95 Deborah Blum ISBN 978-1-59420-243-8 “In the early twentieth century industrial innovation flooded the United States with wealth of modern poisons, creating new opportunities for clever poisoners and new challenges for the country's early forensic detectives.” The Poisoner's Handbook by Deborah Blum is a non-fiction book which takes place around the Prohibition era in New York City, a time period also known as the jazz age. The book is told through the eyes of the chief medical examiner, Dr. Gettler. He was the first forensic scientist in the United States. Each chapter in the Poisoner's Handbook is about a different poison and a different murder in New York City. The book covers different poisons, from arsenic to carbon monoxide. The Poisoner's Handbook was interesting because Deborah Blum was able to mix chemistry, history and murder mystery all in one chapter. It could get a little confusing at times because of all the chemistry involved. There's some language, but its not too bad. This book was a fascinating read, because of all the poisons that were used. It's scary how many just every day products like bug spray, rat poison and even balding cream contained poisonous chemicals. I would recommend The Poisoner's Handbook to someone who enjoys history, science or murder mystery books. It is geared toward 8th grade and up. Even though The book involves murder, it's not very heavy in terms of violence. Although this book is non-fiction, it almost reads like a fiction novel-you just want to keep turning the page. The story started off very cute. A little girl with her imaginary friend. That is really cute!! When the girl becomes a woman it is a different story. I made my angry that she allow people to walk over her especially, a guy who she was dating and who didn't care for her. He was a selfish bastard! She and people put up with him being that way and so he continues act like he does. It does come to a head though. It does get better for all in this story. The story was so easy to read and I keep reading til I finished. I hope Patterson do not write anymore like this. It's gonna get too old for me.

I learned that poetry could be smart in science-y ways while also sounding like regular sh*t people say. I like all of Dean Young's books. This was just the first one I read. Recently, Dean Young wrote a blurb for the cover of my book. That was like a dream come true, like time had gone in a spiral and changed me over into a different person who I should like better, but who was really mainly the same.
this was such an incredible book! heartbreaking and funny. it gives such a wonderful perspective to grieving, growing, loving and life!
