Too many people write memoirs these days, thinking their story requires telling, but I was totally blown away by "Expecting Adam." Martha Beck and her husband John, both completing their Ph.d's at Harvard in the late 1980s (after completing their undergraduate and graduate degrees at the same school), are a career- and success-driven couple until they find out their second child will be born with Down syndrome. This knowledge rocks them, as they are intelligent, liberal, highly-educated, and highly-successful people who expect to give birth to a Nobel-prize winning son with an IQ of 160. This news about their son (whom they both, separately, decide to name Adam) brings them face-to-face with their own insecurities, fears, anxieties, and prejudices. Adamently pro-choice, Martha decides to keep the baby despite the stark disapproval and prejudices of her classmates and colleagues. Her pregnancy with Adam also opens her and her husband up to the possibility of benevolent forces (specifically angels, and in my opinion, God) that they had never thought possible before. A very compelling, multi-faceted book.

Even better than the first. Hap and Oates and Umber travel to strange and disturbing faraway places and run into a tyrannical king, Desolas Island, soul crabs, dragons, and spider folk. I enjoy this odd, well-drawn blend of characters: solid Oates who cannot speak a lie; young Hap worried and anxious about his past and future (some clues emerge in this tale); and the brilliant, manic-depressive Umber. Unique and enjoyable. Beautifully written.

Woolf has a great sense of humor and I love how dialogue and thoughts are intertwined. Overall, though, not a memorable story in my opinion.

** spoiler alert ** Originally posted at Once Upon a Chapter Is truly a 3.5. Dead Man's Eye is a good read if you have an hour or two to kill. For the bargain price of $.99 it'll keep you entertained. To be clear this is in no way, shape or form even close to a romance. It is a horror novella. Joanna is the recent recipient of a cornea transplant. While on her way to a doctor’s appointment a man is knocked into the way of a subway train and he loses his arm. Joanna witnesses a black shadow rush towards the man but thinks it is due to some troubles she is having with the transplant. Joanna is in for a serious shock when she leaves her appointment and the man from the station is there but he isn’t the same man that she had conversed with at the station. He looks evil and there is a black aura around him. There is also a black limb where his human arm used to be. It isn’t until Joanna witnesses several strange events and several more black auras that she starts seriously worrying about what is going on. Who is this person and why is he spreading his blackness like an infection? More importantly, who is going to believe her? Jeffrey writes a pretty suspenseful tale in the short amount of pages that the book has, only 126 according to my Nook. The only thing that stopped this book from being a B+ or even an A for me was what I felt was an unnecessary rape scene. We don’t know the woman just that the demon possessing the body gets his kicks from “defiling” human women. Thankfully it is one brief scene and then the story moves on. Overall, Jeffrey does a great job keeping you entertained for a little while without hitting your pocketbook heavily.

This story is pretty darn cute! Willow does a good job of "asking for the order" in getting help from the neighbors in her new neighborhood, and it's all very creative and colorful. Fun book!

I have to admit that the concept of this book totally grabbed me. After reading the blurb, I knew I wanted to read this book. And I loved it! In this alternate universe, the Violets are people who can channel the dead. They are born with the skill and all have violet eyes. They also have some fascinating jobs within society and are actively expected to help out whenever the authorities need them. They are also closely monitored and controlled by the NAACC, and often testify in court by serving as conduits to the dead. When someone starts killing Violets, FBI agent Dan teams up with Violet Natalie to solve the murders, while also babysitting her to make sure she's kept save. As more of the people from Natalie's past turn up dead, it becomes obvious that she could be the next target. The longer Dan spends with Natalie, the more his reluctance to have anything to do with Violets fades. The mystery of who and why the killer is targetting Violets was fantastically woven, with new clues exposed along the way that made it look as if Dan and Natalie were on the right track, only to be pushed in another direction. The red herrings were cleverly thrown in, and even when I started suspecting someone, I was suddenly pushed off course. Through Violet Eyes is an intriguing and interesting book that sucked me in from the very beginning. The concept of the Violet's ability is amazing, every detail so planned out that by the final revelation, you can't help but nod your head and appreciate just how clever this book was. And the black room - where souls are trapped until they move on - is described so vividly that I got chills just thinking about it. The end left me feeling a little melancholy. There's a shade of deep sadness, but the spark of hope intrigued me. Since this is the first book in a series, I can't wait to read more! This is a seriously great book.

LOVED this book. Loved the history- WWII Guernsey during the nazi occupation - loved experiencing the beautiful story as it unfolded through letters written between the characters, That plot device doesn't alway work, but it does in this book. (It made me want to sit down and write a letter to far away family.) This book has much more depth than the title and book cover suggest. It is a compelling tale which will stay with you long after you finish the final chapter. My ****BOOK OF THE MONTH**** for April. Highly recommended.
