I'm hooked on Sanderson. Like Card, he uses the genre to wrestle with LDS themes and questions: faith plays big in this trilogy, as does the 'opposition in all things' principle. I also found the ending of this one to be rather refreshing and even a bit surprising.

This is not easy too read, because the chapters bounce back and forth through different narrators. However, once you get the hang of the narration style, I found this to be a very powerful story and in interesting look at early America.

I really like magical realism, which is what this book is. I am also very faithful to Stephen King (being from Maine), even though much of what he writes tiptoes the line of "beach reading." This story is not horror, per se, although there are some horrific scenes. it really draws you into the characters and the story. I liked it a lot, actually.

This book approximately 4000 pages longer than necessary. It basically kept saying "hi. i have a philosophy. let me have one of my characters drone about it for 100 pages. then in case you didn't get it, i'll have someone else say the same thing 12 pages later."
