I read this because it was our book club selection for the month. A nice, 90 year old woman, Elner Shimfissle, falls off a ladder and "sort-of" dies but not quite. A variety of cliche characters in an "America-small-southern-town-applepie-gossip-knowingeverybody'sbusiness" setting. A couple of pages on what her funeral arrangements were, part of a chapter on looking for her cat etc etc - a very simple story. Could be a sitcom on the country channel CMT. Good grief there are recipes at the end of the book... one for Heavenly Caramel Cake. Way, way too sappy for me.

A rule book for LARPing. I used to play this when I was younger, and a friend of mine wanted to start up a game so I thought I would familiarize myself with the "official" rules. Only a good read if you are interested in LARPing; otherwise a waste of time. It had a lot of creative suggestions for killing someone, so I hope a game is forthcoming...

Not extravagant, doesn't try to go overboard. For anyone who has done things they regret in life, a must read.

A fantastic book that I am currently studying for my "Dark Hero" unit at university. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Gothic literature. However, even if you're not, read it, because it will get you into the genre. It makes some great points about organised religion and the ways in which monks and nuns live - especiallly how their lives of chastity and isolation can in fact be more harmful than good to their own personalities and to others around them. I was expecting the writing to be rather old-fashioned and complicated due to the age of the book, but the language used is actually surprisingly modern and makes the book very hard to put down. Amazing twist at the end that I never saw coming! I will definitely be reading more Gothic literature from now on.
What a mission to even finish this book. Not for me at all.

GoodReads ate this review too; I liked this book although it is much lighter than what I'm normally into

Still going strong!
The start was a bit shaky - a few Americanisms thrown in there (Why 'visit with'??! It's a daft, redundant sort of expression!) but when I got in to it I found it to be a really rather compelling novel! This is the story of Juana 'The Mad', Quuen of Castile, daughter of Ferdinand & Isabella, the catholic kings. Gortner has an interesting take on Juana's 'madness' which he develops in the novel. It's not altogether a comfortable read though! so many times I felt myself to be frustrated for Juana and the situation she found herself in - manipulated by others. An interesting and thought-provoking read about a queen perhaps not much known outside of Spain.

A friend of mine recently recommended this and said it's very amazing and awe-inspiring. Read the info on it, so I'm not incorrect when talking about it.
