I credit this book with starting my love of pioneer stories. Diary books are some of my favorite and this one tops them all. It is written for a young audience so keep that in mind. This will always be a favorite, and I recently passed it on to my niece. She is 8 and she loved it, so take that as a more age appropriate stamp of approval.

Stephen King says about the first 2 books in series: "We've been down Hannibal Lecter Avenue many times, and these two books shouldn't work...but they do. Chalk it up to excellent writing and Cain's ferocious sense of humor. The Portland (Ore.) setting is refreshing too." I really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to book 4. Evil and compelling female serial killer and interesting stockhold syndrome explored. Can get pretty gruesome at times, so not for the squeamish. Highly recommended.

This is an easy chapter book which addresses an issue not often found in humane education literature: children who raise an animal for 4-H, become attached, and then resist betraying their friend. Rural children especially may find a relatable character in young Sydney, who raises mischievous piglet with the intention of selling her at the end of the summer. With the proceeds gained from the pig, she hopes to buy a horse. However, as “Sausage Patty” grows and proves herself to be a clever and loving friend, Sydney’s horse obsession fades and she focuses her energy on saving the piglet’s life. Children who don’t wish to sell their 4-H animals for slaughter face numerous obstacles and a great deal of pressure to conform. Allevato deals with this realistically. Recommended for humane education bookshelves.

I would've given this book 5 stars, but it has a sad ending which kinda ruined it for me. :( but otherwise I loved this book. But the ending is horrible.
