I really wobbled between giving 3 or 4 stars to this book. It was a very short, very easy read, and a very satisfying, if abrupt, ending. It certainly doesn't match Bunnicula for Howe's wild imagination. The writing felt choppy, and mildly contrived. I would recommend the book for young readers just out of chapter books except for the profanity and older subject matter. It might best be a recommendation for reluctant young adult readers.

Two same-subject books arrived one day. The books are so alike that I just goofed on which one I read and which I took back to the library. Thayer's book is the one I'll buy and keep. His introduction has a "Claimer" rather than a "Disclaimer" which publishers put in to abrogate responsibility for anyone croaking as a result of eating the wrong thing. Thayer scoffs openly at a publisher that wrote "Neither the authors nor the publishers in any way endorse consumption or other uses of wild plants that are mentioned in this book." What a hoot! Thayer stands by his work, takes responsibility for any erroneous information, which I'll guess means it's all good, researched stuff, and then writes "But, of course, I am not responsible for your mistakes." This book will be on my reference shelf just as soon as I balance my checkbook.

One of the few books I couldn't put down. I actually went to bed and had to get back up to read it. I would add that this was more of a "Historical fiction" novel written with a medical twist. It was amazing.

It was culled from her one-person stage show and reads like it. While frequently funny, I didn't really think it gave me any real knowledge about the subject matter or the author. I'm glad she can laugh at herself, but I didn't really get anything three dimensional out of it. Two stars for the jokes.

A novel concept! I enjoyed the short stories and characters and of course the recipes! I savoured reading this book over many months and trying out the recipes. I found the characters all rather endearing and can't help relating them to people I myself have known.

I've been meaning to read this book for awhile, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. I initially thought it would only be about fast food itself, and while it does delve into some of the Upton-Sinclair-esque horrors of what passes as "food" at McD's et al, it's actually an important overview of how far-reaching the impact of McDonaldization has been for the US economy, culture, agriculture industry, and urban development. Also, this book is a pretty good complement to The Fine Print since it also goes into some detail of how much the government has failed us for the benefit of corporate interests through legislation, subsidies, and willful neglect of its duty to ensure decent work conditions, food safety, and workplace protections for workers.
