Stranger was first published in 1961, and became one of the three genre-icons of the decade. (The other two being DUNE and THE HOBBIT.) Everybody had the green-flag ecology patch on their denim jacket, a "Bilbo Saves!" bumper sticker, and a "Grok" button on their lapel. It's unarguably one of the top sf classic novels of all time. It perhaps hasn't aged as well as it might have, but then again civilization didn't progress the same way Heinlein thought that it should. Some of it seems a little clumsy or self-conscious now in spots, but it's nevertheless still one of the best.

Its a bit jumpy but its a good book. I have been trying to find history books about how food and politics intertwined and this is the closest I can find. Any recommendation?

I read this in highschool and really liked it. Its been about 10 years since then and maybe I wouldn't like it now but still... I figured I'd add it anyways.

I read this in the 3rd grade and found it fascinating. I can't really remember the details, but do remember sitting in my closet with it because it was the only place where I could get quiet.I think it was the first book I ever had the patience to actually finish.

When did the movie come out? that's about when I first read it. My favorite of his. Why do I love sad books so much? My paperback copy was a tie-in to the movie and had a torrid sort of cover.

I like the twist on magick this book takes. The wild magick theory intrigued me greatly, as well as the unique world. Good trilogy.

Loved this book! Very atmospheric
If you want to get a close look at the beating heart of Deleuze and Guatarri's thoughts this is the book. This provides a very dense statement of the way they see everything. If you want to understand any and all other of their books, read this one first.

Just saw David Gordon Green's adaptation this weekend at the Sundance/BAM festival here in Brooklyn and was mightily impressed. The book is excellently conceived, and delivers all of the 70s era isolation you could possibly want without any lingering images of Kevin Kline in a three peice cordouroy suit.

The beginning of this novel is amazing. By the end meanings whirl and fly apart and it becomes difficult to find cohesion in Darrieussecq's world. I love that she is interested in palpable absences, like staring into the gaping hole of a wound. In an interview she says: "The unsaid is that which advances literature, that which it explores as a virgin or submerged land. Ghosts are born of the unsaid. Children are particularly sensitive to them: they hear the specters shake their chains in the attic, they believe in monsters under the bed, they notice the stirring of creatures in the cupboards…What is hidden from them is always concerning death or sexuality: and these fundamental questions, passed in silence, oblige them to structure themselves using ghosts, to trust their imaginations to clarify the world... Fantastic literature is the fear of the dark which is rediscovered by adults. With regards to conjugal, familial, and social scales, what happens silently makes itself heard in one way or another: it is a map of psychoanalysis. To write is to give a voice to ghosts." http://www.uri.edu/artsci/ml/durand/d... If you are a student of literature or creative writing, this is a great example of a novel being given a layer of poetry and substance by drawing on critical theory (though of course that makes it a novel that is not for everyone).
