Although the language of this novel was a bit too flowery for my taste I did enjoy the message: take time to enjoy life's small pleasures and slow down!

My wife recommended this book and as usual her taste is impeccable. Written in the 40s, McCullers write about originally people in a way that allows you to care about them. Reviewers have described them as losers or outcasts. I described them as lost and searching. The main protagonist is Mr. Singer, a deaf-mute who is as lost as the other characters but is a lighting rod for them as they talk with him never really knowing if he understands but feeling that he does. The author does a fine job capturing the Southern small town atmosphere. She also exhibits an understanding of racial relations and sociological undercurrents that was unheard of in most writers in this period. This is one of the finest works of American 20th century literature.

My husband read this first, and his succinct review was that "a whole lot of nothing happens." Yeah, that's about right! However, I liked this book. Swanson obviously is fascinated by this topic, and it comes through in his narrative. Although he cannot know for certain the thoughts and motivations of the major players, his research seems so thorough that he is in a good place to make reasonable conjectures. Despite the absence of action throughout most of the book, he held my interest as well as my sympathy; I found myself almost going against history and hoping Booth would get away. If it weren't for the central tragedy, this would almost be a farce. I am again borrowing from another when I sum up Booth's flight south thusly: Run! Pause... pause... pause... pauuuuuse. Casually resume saunter southward. And I admit it: I laughed out loud when Herold and Garrett stood arguing on the front lawn as the oblivious cavalry thundered by them, and the terrified (uh-huh) Herold essentially said "OK, yeah, so we'll be leaving.... tomorrow morning." What the... !

I loved this book. I don't think I'll ever forget how I felt suffocated too in Zola's description of the flooding mine. Good book: love, death, family bitterness, poor, rich, political action, ignorance, mistakes -- the works.

Another good read by Ms. Dare; the quality of her writing exceeds that found in most romance novels, IMO. Her characters are relatable and engaging, in part due to their well developed psychologies that evolve logically throughout the book. She's becoming a new favorite author of mine. I think if you liked Twice Tempted by a Rouge, you will like Bram and Susanna's story (and vice versa).

loved it, best of all the books, which was why it was made into a series but i think it would have been better as a movie. still, a good read

Masterfully paced and rife with detail and action, this book is an absolute pleasure to go through, made even more enthralling by the last 10 chapters. The battle that takes place at the end, while small in scale, rivals the battle of the Pelennor fields in the blood-pumping feeling it invokes. I intend to start the Dragon Reborn immediately.

This is an enjoyable memoir by a writer who read Michael Pollan and some other books, had a baby, then decided to write about her experiences volunteering to work in a restaurant in her neighborhood in Brooklyn. She also went to the restaurant's suppliers and learned about the how the produce, cheese, fish, and meat was produced (so there's a bit about rural life in there). It's funny, because at the beginning of the book, her 1 y.o. is existing mainly on bananas and yogurt. He won't eat *any* of the typical toddler foods. The chapters are mix of parenting stories, food and cooking descriptions (with some recipes), and political and literary stuff about food - local foods, organic foods, food miles, and M.F.K. Fisher are all included. There's no index, though, which annoyed me when I wanted to find something to read to my dh (Rehak's quote from Fisher about little kids' food preferences, from "Serve It Forth", 1937): "When a man is small, he loves and hates food with a ferocity which soon dims...His throat will close, and spots of nausea and rage swim in his vision. It is hard, later, to remember why, but at the time there is no pose in his disgust. He cannot eat; he says, 'To hell with it!'" (p. 37-38).
