This is a historical novel set in Mughal India and in Renaissance Florence. The novel unfolds as the story of a young boy showing up at the Mughal court claiming to be related to the king is revealed. That is about as much as I can say as I am not sure that I followed the plot carefully. There are so many interwoven story lines that it gets confusing and some of the chapters are better taken as individual vignettes rather than pieces of the whole. While I can't give a detailed account of the plot, I did enjoy the writing very much.

I loved this book. I will never look or think of musicians the same way. The romance takes me right back to my teenage and courting years where all you can think about is your boyfriend. It also reminds me that the choices we make as teenagers do effect the rest of our lives. Why do we have to make such important decisions when our brain hasn't fully developed yet?

Issues such as gentrification, racism, crime, and integration in public schools are the backbone of this book. If you want to learn about civil rights events from different racial perspectives, this would be a good start.
