CIDN is a quick and easy read that happened to come along at a fairly good time for me. However, I'm not sure I would've liked it as much, had I not read it when I did. Christopher's story is heart-wrenching, and I think a lot of people could benefit from reading this. Everyone feels isolated from his/her world at times. This book begs us to be compassionate towards those whom we don't understand. I've always been told that sometimes people have more problems than those that seem to immediately present themselves. CIDN helped me to put that "saying" into perspective. As I prefer ratings out of ten: 7/10.

I guess it was creepy but I only felt creeped out for like 5 minutes. I love Kendall and Jacian! I have to say though, at first I was really skeptical with Jacian because of his behavior which made me classify him under the hot-but-brooding stereotype. I was glad to find out however that he's not brooding altogether. I'm not sure I understand who Piere is though, if he's mr. Greenwood or not. I thought it really ended with the bonfire, but not, which was quite creepy. Anyway, I'm having a hangover thinking of Kendall and Jacian's cuteness together.

** spoiler alert ** Gibson deals in ideas and events, not characters. That distinction was a little jarring at first. Even after the novel was underway, Gibson's authorial intrusions, using characters as mouthpieces, often was annoying. Mostly, Gibson speaks through his characters to explain technical concepts and ideas, to avoid having the discussion come from his own mouth. It's a little like watching someone use hand puppets, except that instead of explaining the alphabet he's talking about locative art, war profiteering, and other nifty stuff of the digerati age. Sometimes, the characters are outright annoying, as though Gibson doesn't know what to do with them. One of the main characters is informed that she will not be allowed to leave, and she spends her time checking out two of the men. It doesn't convince. Mostly, the characters are fine, if a little worn from Gibson's hand up their bottoms and voice erupting randomly through their mouths. The characters aren't they key element of the story, although they often are interesting. Neither is the plot. Gibson lays out the plot elements, so that the reader can have some fun figuring out what will happen before it happens, and before the characters figure anything out. The style of telling - three interwoven stories from the viewpoints of three different characters - interested me. But the real fun was the journey into "spook country," a different world operating on different rules. This country is secret, and cool, even as it surely is public and horrible. It is the country of the novel, a parallel country existing in all countries. With the novel, Gibson has a lot of fun. He is commenting on paranoia, hyper-patriotism, the condition of the United States under G. W. Bush, the intersection of spying and celebrity, and the idle games of the super-rich. In the end, he acknowledges that there is little that individuals can do against the powerful and the wealthy. But he argues, through the novel, that even individuals - at least ones with a strong moral purpose, which all three of his protagonists possess - can cause a little mayhem and mischief and come out no worse for the wear.

First of all: Sophie Kinsella is one of my favorite authors, she NEVER lets me down. As all of her books, this one was a huge thrill for me. It can make you laugh in no time, and its not like most "girlies" books. It has an interesting story, not involving ridiculous things or futil things. Its a real good comedy piece of literature. Perfect for passing time, forgetting problems, well... its perfect! If you're looking for a good book, you've found! And if you like this one, I'm sure you will love all the others!! ^^

This was the first Bukowski I ever read. Weird place to start... I was definitely kind of confused when I started reading his other stuff. Still, I remember laughing my ass off through this whole book and that's good times.

Part history of the super hero (in comics and other mediums), part autobiography, I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in comic book super heroes. Morrison's examination of the birth of the super hero and its evolution through the decades is insightful and entertaining. His analysis of significant works and events in the history of super hero comics is thought provoking, and makes me want to go back and re-read "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns", "Watchmen", "Green Lantern/Green Arrow", "Kingdom Come", (all of which are among my favorites, I will admit) "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and even more recent stories such as "Identity Crisis", "Infinite Crisis", and "Final Crisis". This book has also piqued my interest about some other works that I haven't read in their entirety, including "All Star Superman" There was one glaring omission in my opinion, and that is the absence of discussion about "Astro City" and its role in the "re-birth" of super heroes after the dark days following "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" and "Watchmen" and the imitators that followed. As I read Morrison's analyses of various significant works, I looked forward to his analysis of "Astro City" and it never materialized. I expect he had a good reason for not discussing it, but I still found myself somewhat disappointed. Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book. In fact, it has been a little while since I'd read a book that I enjoyed this much. If you read super hero comics or are at all interested in super heroes, you should definitely read this.
