The best part of this book is how Krakauer explains how not only followers of Mormonism, but of any religion, do so blindly accepting things which cannot be explained, and likens this to how Americans idly accept the Bush Administration's reasons for battling the axes of evil.

I felt like I wasn't supposed to like this book, but I did despite myself. Just the idea of a secret language between women thousands of years ago was cool enough for me.

How can a book about information theory be enlightening? If you think of the world as being composed of bits of information rather than atoms it really changes your perspective. How can a book about information theory be entertaining? Gleick does a great job of making some very high level concepts accessible (although the chapter on Charles Babbage and his Difference Engine does go on a bit). It really is worth a try - I don't know if it will change your life, but it will certainly change the way you think about your life. -- Aimee F.

This book is sad, for Georgie and never really gets better.

A great read. I normally do not like books that are formatted this way, meaning told in a series of poems, but I think McCall did a great job. She managed to bring in heritage and emotion and a coming-of-age story all at once. I can't think of anything to complain of, and I would recommend this to many people

Sped through this book. Fascinating story and kept wanting to find out what happened next. I don't know why I expected there to be more on the psychology of battered women generally - this book really is a memoir of the author's time in an emotionally and physically abusive marriage. It was interesting because the author does not fit the stereotype of a battered woman. At times, I wished the author had engaged in some further analysis, looking back on that time, to the things that made her react to the abuse in the way she did. I feel that she was trying to convey that this type of thing can happen to any woman at any time for any reason. I just wish that out of this came some more concrete identification of how women can protect themselves. I don't mean to say that women should modify their behavior to avoid abuse or that they can attract abusive men by doing certain things-- I just wish there were something more to take away than "it can happen to you!!" - scary and disempowering. But after all, this was a memoir, not a study of domestic violence.
