The downside: I remember a lot of explicit sex scenes, tho not terribly long ones. One was between the wife and a man she was not married to. The scene was kind of significant because she demonstrated that her husband was all she could think of...well, except that she was having sex with a different man. But somehow this was loyalty, and if she was terribly lonely and made a mistake, at least her heart held out and the not-a-husband was shamed into leaving. It was touching when I read it the first time. A lot of swearing. A lot of cultural references for a culture that never appealed to me and so i didn't get a whole level of references and whatever they were supposed to do for the reader. They did let me track some of the time, anyway. The upside:A really great love story, very moving, and about loyalty and separation and more. The storyline let me see something horrible was coming. The author helped me handle it.Keeping track of our time jumping hero was good exercise. I remember a lot of really weird sentence structures that could not exist in an ordinary book. Having to talk about future events in the past, or past events that were yet to come, and everything criss crossing, did twisty things to our English grammar. Over all, I'm glad I read the book. I also chose to not keep it.

If we are drawn to love stories at all, then we drawn to the stories of their disintegration; what happened? Is that why this story gripped me? Anne Tyler has such a gentle way with her characters that this emotional hold was surprising. "We just weren't very nice to one another," the male lead says. A critical insight - and his second marriage begins with a similar hurt. My very favorite scene, though, had almost nothing to do with the story. It was of the day Pauline realized her marriage had ended and suddenly, there is her father. He comes in, sits down, and she is able to listen to him and speak some peace into his regrets, bestow some kind of forgiveness. Then he leaves. He is oblivious to her chaotic emotional state, which she hides. It was one of those truthful vignettes which seem emblematic of Ms. Tyler's stories. It's why I read her.

I enjoyed the read because it was an enjoyable topic and not anything I really needed to analyze. However, her prose bugged me. I hated how some chapters were written in the "I" form and then she switched to "you". I understand what she was doing but I thought it was lame. Also, she would make what were supposed to be poignant statements that didn't really pull through for me - I would be left thinking, "What is she trying to say?". Again, I understood what she was going for but it just didn't work. I wouldn't not recommend this book but it is what it is. Just a quick, enjoyable read that you may or may not be bugged by. Take it to the beach this summer.

These guys are pretty sharp, and the discussion of Bayes' Rule as a guiding principle for neural function approximation is quite thorough. That said, they really underestimate the importance of population codes, etc. - possibly because they don't fit into their mathematical formalism compactly. A good one, though.
