Well-written, of course, but just too depressing.

I read these books in Middle School, and upon re-read, I still love them. The unforgettable episodes in Anne of Green Gables are a great foundation to build this series on. My only criticism was that I wish we got to know Gilbert better, so we could love the man Anne loved. We knew some things about him, but not a whole lot.

I'm sorry. I tried, it dragged, and I wasn't enjoying it. I don't believe I've read the whole thing before, maybe just Perfect Day for Bananafish. I'm afraid to reread Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye because I had loved it so much....have I changed that much from my 15-year old self?

I really liked this book. The idea of a girl moving back and forth around Europe with no reason other than a letter telling her to do so definitely caught my interest.

This novel is by Louis de Bernieres, author of Corelli's Mandolin, who holds a special affection for Greece and the Balkans. This novel is told from the point of view of Chris, a married English man in his 40's who seems to be undergoing a midlife crisis, and a Bosnian woman named Roza. He picks her up believing she is a prostitute. Her identity proves to be more complex and mysterious than his assumptions. She invites him into her derelict flat scheduled for demolition and over the course over many months keeps him fascinated by her life story, while they drink innumerable cups of coffee and she smokes exotic cigarettes. She is Sheherazade, spinning tales to entice him, while he hopes for an opportunity for a sexual relationship. Her father was a Partisan and follower of Yugoslavian Marshall Tito. Details of her vagabond life enthrall Chris. Ultimately, his patience, forbearance and careful wooing of her are derailed by alcohol with tragic consequences.Because the story is told only from the inner dialog and interchanges between the two characters it achieves great intimacy. We become voyeurs of their drama and share in the poignancy of their unexpressed love .
Dik Seong Jen, otherwise known as Dixie, is a hotheaded teenage girl from Koreatown, in South Central Los Angeles. Although she is an excellent student of hapkido, a Korean martial art, her teacher worries that she has lost her sense of balance, or ki, without which she cannot reach her full potential. Dixie suspects that one reason for this loss is her all-consuming, but unrequited crush on a fellow student, Adam. To impress Adam on his birthday, Dixie presents him with what, for her, is a meaningful gift, a statue of a Korean knight. Adam, however, is more interested in iPod accessories, and ends up re-gifting the statue to another girl he likes better. Meanwhile, he wants Dixie to withdraw from the championship hapkido tournament, so that he can win it instead. Dixie must make some difficult choices, but learns that her alternatives are less limited than they seem. The action-packed black and white drawings in this story convey the drama of the fight scenes, as well as the inner conflicts of Dixie, who carries the double burden of peer pressure and the aspirations of her father, a recent immigrant. I especially liked how one of the illustrators represented her confusion, by placing her within an M.C. Escher drawing, in which continuous stairs lead to nowhere. The background drawings also provide a sense of the racial tensions in her tough neighborhood and the social interactions of boys and girls in her high school. There were only a few instances in which I found the story difficult to follow, or couldn’t distinguish between characters because they weren’t always drawn in a consistent way; this may be a consequence of the fact that the book has several illustrators. Dixie is an imperfect but strong heroine, who, in spite of herself, seeks harmony in a perplexing and sometimes aggressive world. Teenage girls dealing with peer pressure, parental pressure, and/or racism might find inspiration from her story. Teens might also simply be entertained by the combination of fighting and romance in this fast-paced novel.

Thomas wakes up in a box with no memory of his former life, but he knows his name and has vague recollections of things past (hot dogs, moms and dads, etc...). Emerging from the box he finds a group of teenage boys afflicted with the same issues living in a stone maze whose walls move each night into a different configuration. They have created their own society and the boys have assigned themselves jobs to help sustain their community : tending livestock, growing food, preparing food, medical personnel and finally the Runners. The Runners run through the maze each day recording the changes in the hope of finding a way out. Thomas is determined to become a Runner. On the second day he is there, the box returns but this time a girl is in it. She is incoherent and lapses into a coma but they find, clutched in her hand, a note that says she is the last one. Her arrival soon triggers the end of their supplies from the outside and an increase in the attacks by the mechanical creatures patrolling the maze named Grievers. Will they be able to find a way out? Will Thomas become a Runner and save the day? This was a great book and very entertaining. The story kept me on my toes and was a surprise through the end. I enjoyed the characters and found myself rooting for them. If you like the Hunger Games, you'll definitely like this series as well.

Another Mitch Rapp novel by Vince Flynn. He's a good author for entertaining spy novels.
