Stephani plum is a laugh, i love her side kicks in the last few books. you'v got stephanie's main sidekick, Lula the ex hoe who's a 200pound black woman with bright orange hair, bright pink lipstick who wears bright spandex cloths that are a few sizes to small and super high heels. stehpanie's second sidekick, her grandma mazur (who's my fave character) she's an old lady who wants to pick up "stud muffins" and hasnt got a problem shooting or hurting people and loves looking at dead bodies. then there's sally the transvestite who looks like a giant ugly female that keeps a gun in his/her panties. sally swears like a sailor, cant put on makeup and is REALLY hairy. she's also a part of an all transvestite band but she isnt into dudes. and in this book we had a midget (little person), randy briggs. at the start he was a FTA and stephanie had a lot of trouble trying to get him out of his house, when she finally managed it she had to rip open his door with a tire iron and briggs went a bit insane after that and they ended up taking a tumbler down two flights of stairs, now everyone thinks stephanie beet up a little person. then in a few days he gets to go home, but his house has been destroy because of the broken door so he has to stay with stephanie for a few days - which is hilarious but they end up becoming friends. so you can imagine all the fun i have reading just about the sidekicks let alone the rest of the characters. also in this book ranger decides to put the moves on stephanie even after she blow up his Porsche and lost his BMW, so now stephanie has to choose from ranger and joe, i would choose joe he seems to truly care for her. at the end of the book she calls up someone to spend the night with, im not sure who it was but im guessing joe. well thats just a little taste of what happens in one of stephanie's book so i would highly recommend reading this series if your after a laugh.

It's a series of short stories that come from a character in her book Eva Luna. The stories are romantic, extremely hot, and grapple with the profundity of everyday life. Some of it is political (her uncle was THE Allende), but not in an innane or insulting way. This is the best book of hers I've read yet. And sooo sweet.

one of my favorite books ever...so much so that it was the focus of my senior paper in college. There's something about a story that can be fanciful and political at the same time.

Read more reviews at The Sirenic Codex Kimberly Derting's The Pledge has the type of cover that calls to me. I'm fond of pretty things and The Pledge's cover was the type that had friends asking if they could take a look at the book. When it comes to the content, I wasn't as impressed. The first problem is that almost nothing happens for a really, really long time. The plot is slow and while it's a readable book, nothing about it really draws the reader in. I think a lot of the problems concern execution because the ideas behind what's happening is nice. The characters, for one, are utterly unremarkable. I don't think they had much depth because they didn't fascinate me at all. They weren't real in any way. There was instalove, and what surprises me once again is how sudden it is. I don't even know who this Max dude is and then he's declaring his love for Charlie. What's super ridiculous is that he lies a lot to Charlie, and somehow she seems to trust him completely. None of the characters were individuals. They felt like clichés to me and it was disappointing. The believability was lacking as well. The world is interesting; there are classes which are distinguished based on what language you know. You're only allowed to know your class' language and that of the class below. The setting is some futuristic monarchy that also has some type of magic. It was hard to understand the parameters of the world and I think this magic part was haphazardly thrown in. It didn't feel plausible because the parameters of the world weren't well established. I had no idea what I was dealing with for most part of the novel. The plot was slightly entertaining, but it had its ups and downs. I felt like it dragged on and was incredibly slow until the end where it kind of went ballistic. Stuff was happening and it wasn't being properly explained and all of a sudden there's some kind of battle and then, the end. The Pledge wasn't what I was expecting at all. It's a much lighter read than anticipated. I would compare it to The Selection by Kiera Cass, except that story was slightly more entertaining. I was expecting a more coherent, focused, and mature story than what I got and my expectations are probably what damned the book a bit. I mean, even the cover is in all black! It screams "serious" book, doesn't it? (Or am I completely off base?) Near the end of the book I became completely disinterested and considered DNFing. I decided not to just because I was almost done. Now, I know I sound extremely negative in my review but this book isn't a book to hate. I actually don't have particularly strong feelings either way. I didn't like it. It wasn't my cup of tea technically or emotionally. I wasn't invested. So, 1 heart. (Also, I have to throw this out there: the font wasn't the best. I like that they decided to try a different font, but it doesn't fit with the story at all. The cover is all about elaborate, elegant font which makes sense considering the importance of the monarchy in the story and so a sans-serif is slightly jarring. But, I'm known to be a bit of a font snob.)

Sigh. I think I didn't understand this book and I am eagerly awaiting discussing it with someone who did!

It's a good adventure book. I already know the story so it wasn't very exciting for me. I would recommend it for teens.

This was a decent book, tense and interesting with good, familiar characters. But I found it a little complicated, things that were never quite explained well enough to satisfy me. Which isn't always a bad thing, because generally I like complicated and I like challenging to understand. But this felt vague, like Catherine Fisher didn't really understand the intricate details of the things she was weaving together and the mythology she was creating and drawing from so couldn't explain it well. Maybe I'm wrong but there's usually a different feel to books where the author knows things they leave unexplained and when they don't really delve deep enough into their story to understand it well enough to really write it. Also the ending was rather abrupt, there weren't any loose in but everything was wrapped up in two pages and then it was done. I would have liked the resolution drawn out and enjoyed as much as some of the descriptions. But Fisher has created an interesting world and engaging characters so it's still a good book and fun to read.
