I didn't want to read this (because I am a huge snob), but I actually kind of enjoyed it. It had a bit of what I understood about Travels with Charlie--the need to escape, the desire to be without commitments.

Among Others is gorgeous, gorgeous gorgeousness. This story of a Welsh, disabled, scifi-obsessed teenage girl claiming her independence after the death of her twin sister is a rich, introspective narrative that will speak to anyone who has ever found solace from the outside world in fantasy or scifi, and to anyone who has ever found much-needed community with fellow bibliophiles. This is a story about being an other, physically, intellectually, regionally, and about how books can breach that otherness, connecting lonely individuals to readers and writers, to all those who have read or written in the past, in a beautiful tangled web of words and thoughts and allusions to past words and thoughts. This is a story about inhabiting a female body and what it is to have mothers and sisters who inhabit that same body, all those other women who are a part of us and yet are not us. Despite all Mor's discussion of genderless scifi worlds and sexuality spectrums, this is a book that is firmly rooted in being a girl, in what it is to come of age in a body with a vagina, yet not be defined by that. And despite all of the fantastical elements like faeries, witches and magic, this is a book that is rooted in realism, in real-life love and loss, family and friendship. This book is truly beautiful. This book is truth. Note: I won this book in a goodreads giveaway.

I wanted to read this book for the account of the author's translation services during the Nazis Nuremberg trial but the account of his early years as a Jew in Germany before the war, his life after he gets out of Germany to go to school in England, subsequently is sent to Australia as an "enemy alien", ends up going around the world before he ends up in New York, reunited with his family, (all this while he is 15-16 years old), and then goes back Africa, Italy and then Germany as a U.S. soldier...is equally fascinating.

I couldn't put this book down from the minute I picked it up! I love the intensity put into each and every chapter. The suspense kept me reading this book from cover to cover, along with the amazing story line. Since it was one of my summer reading books, I thought this book would be a total downer, but it was ANYTHING but! The plot was so interesting, and I have always had a curiosity about twins. Who would've known that twins could actually nothing alike and resent each other? The most heart touching part though was when Starr didn't want Sunny to be her twin! I honestly sat there and cried through the end of the book. No other book has made me cry before. I am truly impressed at the level of skill Peg Kehrethas at writing, and I acknowledge her work on this book.

I liked this book (how could one not like a L. Frank Baum book). It is not my favorite book from the Wizard of Oz collection though.

Great story strong main character. Is a fast paced novel. Lucas is a young PI in washington who got himself a job for a drug dealer and the story picks up from there. I liked the way the city was used to tell us what the lucas was doing and where he was

Utterly depressing. Maybe not brilliant as a whole but there were some killer lines in there. Three stars.

Easily one of the best works that I have read... DeLillo is amazing.
A nice looking book that lists a lot of breeds. Intended to inform about dogs in general, rather than breeds specifically.

Reviewed for Wickedly Bookish http://www.wickedlybookish.blogspot.com/ Diana Bishop is a scholar of alchemy researching at Oxford. Inadvertently, she calls up an ancient, magical text from the stacks of the Bodelin Library; Ashmole 782. Once returned, it sets off a chain reaction that attracts the attention of every witch, daemon, and vampire nearby. The major players of each preternatural group have been seeking the book for centuries in hopes of understanding the origins of their species, and now they are seeking Diana. Can she elude them with the help of a sexy vampire scholar? And what will happen when what develops between them is expressly forbidden? I know a lot of you loved this book, so it is with great sadness that I admit I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. I think my main problem with it stems from the fact that it is so strongly advertised as a literary urban fantasy. I was expecting an intellectual take on witches and vampires and got a "twilight for adults" The scholarly portion of the book takes up the first third and then appears sporadically throughout, but the main focus of the book seems to be the relationship between Diana and Matthew. This would have been much more enjoyable and easier for me to swallow if it had been advertised to me this way to begin with. Don't hand me a sickeningly sweet vampire romance and tell me it is "Equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense..." It would be more accurate to say it is a tale of vampire-witch insta-love sprinkled with history and science. Matthew and Diana know each other for less than a month, but end up so in love with each other, they are willing to put their families in danger in order to be together. Plus their love becomes so overly sappy, I ended up struggling to finish the book. Now, I am not totally hating on this book. From beginning to middle, I was actively engaged and had an enjoyable read. I loved reading about the Oxford atmosphere and yoga classes. I also was delighted by the premise of Matthew researching witch DNA and being able to identify the markers for different inherited powers. That part of the book was wonderful. I had the opportunity to read this book as a buddy read, and one of the women I read this with, Nichole pointed out it was also much longer than it needed to be. I have to agree with her here. There were quite a few scenes and details that could have been shaved off the final product. This would have made the read feel more smooth and less tedious. I always become wary when I sigh in relief after finishing a book. I feel this wouldn't have been the case if it hadn't been so unnecessarily LONG1 This was honestly a case of too much fluff and not enough solid plot. Recommendation: I would definitely recommend this to romance lovers. You will find much to love in a read of A Discovery of Witches. However, if you are more of an urban fantasy person, I think you will find it leaves a lot to be desired.
