This book came to me at a time of great change. It taught me that we are all on a quest for what feels right, fits in our world and what we can do without.

FRANZ KAFKA, Diarios 1910-1913. Ed. Marymar, 1978.
Life is going well for Sally Lockhart, although she can't quite decide how to relate to Fred Garland. But then Sally, Fred, and Jim Taylor become involved in two investigations that quickly become one. At the center of the web of mysteries is a figure of true evil; in confronting it, Sally must face devastating loss. But the gentle lesson of this book seems to be that, despite evil and loss, people who act with courage and honor will endure. Even in the face of death, there is hope. The entire Sally Lockart serious would be a wonderful basis for the discussion of society's expectations, corporate values, and personal ethics.

What a great book. I loved the grandmother. Everything she did made me laugh. I thought the book was very thought provoking. The main character deicided what was important to her, showed compassion and learned something about someone that she thougth to be someone else. Great book to read.

This book was warm and likable in some portions, and thoroughly "meh" in others. I found the characters to be lovely, interesting people. Ry especially felt very genuine as a teen boy character who doesn't necessarily think things through thoroughly. There were lots of lovely descriptive passages capturing character relationship. The plot, though. Oh, the plot. Verging on ridiculous. Also, I'd prefer to leave dialogue between animal characters to Redwall and other such series. I propose that this book is the literary sibling of The Cardturner. Similar characterizations, similar unusually ridiculous plot events, similar coming-of-age experiences.

This book weaves together several stories seamlessly for the first 9/10ths of the book. While in the end, the denouement seems a bit forced - like Ishiguro ran out of steam or time or publisher page limits - he maintains a flawless evenness of tone and sentiment throughout the book. It's full of great characterizations and plot development. I only wish it had ended with more fulfillment. Read more of my reviews at www.andilit.com

Politics that is as presient now as it was then. History, drama, intrigue and power. It's a page turner that really draws you in.

Modern view of Christianity. Able to relate to the stories and situations shared by the author.

Okay, a bit hard to review, because I was unable to finish it. The descriptions of the German occupation of Poland were horrific, and I just couldn't do it? Not that I haven't read similar books, but I just couldn't take the whole sale slaughter.
