God, I hated this book. And everyone finds out I love David Sedaris and then immediately says "You should read Running With Scissors!" and then I'm pissed because I can't be friends with them anymore. Deliberately wacky and patently unbelievable. And bitchy. And my GOD, I did not need to read a graphic description of a TEENAGER giving his MIDDLE-AGED boyfriend a blowjob. If I hadn't been on vacation in a non-English speaking country with limited book selection, I never would have finished it.

A solid read despite its convoluted plot. I would rate this higher if I was younger, but I unfortunately found the stories a bit too adolescent for my taste. The Day Watch is a much better book by comparison. I also was underwhelmed by the translation and editing because it seemed that some of problems in the text were due to a rushed job. Of particular value is the Russian perspective. Attitudes like those in this book about Moscow relative to the rest of the world's places (and products) are uncommon in English language literature. As to this being a ground breaking dark fantasy... I disagree. I think it is certainly well conceived, and I greatly appreciate the themes embedded in this series (such as facing/keeping one's humanity while wielding great power) but the setting feels like one pulled out of White Wolf games, various video games, and the like. Nevertheless it holds together, plays by its own rules - which I appreciate - and certainly rivals other pulp offerings - such as Anne Rice's Vampire books. All in all, if you like fantasy this is a good read. If you are looking for a fantasy that also transcends the genre for something greater... you will be disappointed. The series however does improve in the next book.

This is a horrible, wretched book. Some books have plot and character development; this book has memes. Cyborgs, bounty hunters, vampires, espers, aliens, rogue AIs -- all of them are here, none of them are developed in any way that would make them at all interesting or likeable. One suspects the author had a checklist. "Cyborg... check. Zombie... check." The plot is quite intricate; also, it is completely contrived and utter nonsense.

Didn't finish. I'd like to know what age group the author wrote this book for, as the writing was fairly sophisticated and yet the main character was annoyingly petty and childish. Nothing much happened, either. I'm not sure what age (if any) would find this to be a good read.
