Biography of the brit-band the Kinks. You see their rise in the 60's and 70's and their brief sucess in the 80's. Its an interesting read about the rise of stardom. It flounders a bit at the end but that is to be expected and the group is semi-disbanded. But many great stories to follow even for those who arent a big fan.

My first Vince Flynn novel, and I'm really looking forward to reading more. Flynn writes like Clancy (without all of the submarine specs) and keeps the action moving on every page. The main character, Mitch Rapp, is just like Jack Bauer of "24" fame!

Loved it. What a powerful way to teach children about the frightful ways of our past. Time and time again, I found myself wanting to come through the pages of the book to rescue poor Isabel from the harshest treatment no person should bear - never mind a child. Although the characters are fictional, the experiences and historical references are not, making this novel not only engrossing, but also enlightening.

How does one write a novel where the plot is at once both unbelievably intricate and unforgivably boring? Some novels not originally written in English lose a little something in the translation. I find it difficult imagining this novel as ever having had anything to lose.

This book is from 1979, and I found it on the music library's shelves. Part of me wants to withdraw it, if it were not for the illuminating section highlighting the benefits of reel to reel tape over the collection of LPs. Hee hee. It does have some preservation information that might be helpful, but frankly, even that information has become dated now that we know that even the best reel to reel tape stored at optimum conditions still has a deterioration rate. Ooh, and the chapter explaining why music collection should include more than classical was entertaining, since it seemed to be targeted at public libraries, and I can't imagine public libraries considering onlycollecting classical music. Times have changed indeed. The low rating only reflects the outdated nature. If this were 1979, it would get four or five stars.

I purchased the Nook version of this novel. It is very easy to be turned off by the somewhat generic-looking cover of The Seventh Blessing. There are no shortage of novels that use basic foliage photography as their face. This is unfortunate, since Seventh Blessing has a lot to offer a prospective reader. Samantha is the princess of Mittra, a land where newborns are blessed by the resident fairies with various life-long gifts as a custom. By somewhat foolish luck, Samantha is granted six talents that are not generally considered becoming for someone of her gender and status. She is also covertly granted a seventh blessing, a gift that becomes central to the overall story. Although the first few chapters cover a bit of backstory and earlier years of Samantha's life, the vast majority of the book takes place after her 18th birthday. Throughout the book, we are offered a number of chances to explore the ways that fairy blessings grant special boons to those gifted and also the ways that those same blessings can also compel the recipient into impulsive or even dangerous actions. The princess often finds herself trapped between the conduct expected of her as a member of the royal court and her own need to fulfill her ethical obligations to her friends. During Sam's travels, we get many opportunities for innocent romance and friendship. I felt that Samantha's own romantic prospects were somewhat pat, but may be less obvious to the younger readers for which this book is intended. Her primary love triangle consists of two men and the allegiance and intentions of each is quite clear from the beginning. Although the dialogue is in a relatively 'universal' English, characters will occasionally use phrases or words that are a part of contemporary language. This doesn't make the book difficult to understand, but it sometimes breaks the atmosphere of a fantasy setting. In terms of formatting, Seventh Blessing has a full table of contents, something not every author manages to include in their ebook volumes. There are occasional and unexplained changes in text size, mostly in the very beginning and end, but these do not detract from the overall quality of the work. There are no overt spelling or grammatical errors that take away from the novel's enjoyment.

Gogol is a 1st-generation American, born to Indian parents. This story explores how he grows up, feeling like he doesn't belong with either Bengali or American culture. I loved this book and will definitely read her others, including the well-known "Interpreter of Maladies" that I have not yet read. This would make a great movie. :)

David A. Adler, Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Dinosaur Bones (Scholastic, 1981) Straightforward early-grade mystery that's about as complex as an Encyclopedia Brown story, but takes up a good deal more space; one wonders at the expansive real estate. Still, mystery novels for kids were not a huge commodity back in the eighties (before the term “chapter books” had come about to describe this category of kidlit), and as with any vertical-market application, authors could get away with more, which is why when someone came out with a really good novel-length kidlit mystery, my whole school went nuts. (If you're old enough, remember how popular The Westing Game was when it appeared, for example?) Still, the plot is fun and the characters are as well, and if you don't mind your mystery elements predictable and simplistic, it's not bad. Just don't expect something as complex and engrossing as the average modern kidlit mystery. ***
