Every so often, I come back to Sylvia Plath. This time, it may to do with her son's recent suicide, although it most likely has to do with her original work of prose "The Bell Jar" that I first encountered her about a year ago. However, like many works of poetry, there is no way of understanding the poems without understanding the poet herself. Frieda Hughes attempts to provide some biographical context to these poems - her husband's infidelity, her two small children and being a single mother. I will admit that since I have only a general outline of her life, I will probably not fully understand her poems until years down the road. Yet, even without that knowledge, it is obvious that there is a strong, dark and powerful force in these poems written just before her own suicide: "There's a stake in your fat black heart And the villagers never liked you. They are dancing and stamping on you. They always knew it was you. Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I'm through." - from the poem "Daddy"

This novel was not at all what I expected. Each page made me feel like I was getting to know Olivia well and I just had to keep reading to find out what happened to her next. I liked the way each chapter went from the present to the past to give the reader a better understanding of the characters.

Beautiful writing, but I'm just not a paranormal fan.

I give this between 3 and 4 stars. It was very powerful and has stayed in my thoughts after reading it. There were just some things about the story and the way it was written though that I didn't love. It takes until halfway through the book for the plot to actually pick up, and when it does it is quite overwhelming. It was a quick read, though.

This is an excellent history/analysis of English settlement in North America, from pre-Jamestown times up to American independence, which roughly coincided with the legal establishment of our race-based system of slavery. Morgan is not only a good writer, but he lays out a thorough and well-argued case for why the English colonists switched from indentured servitude to exclusively enslaving Africans and how this (and tobacco) is what allowed the Virginia colony to become economically independent. I found it especially interesting to learn how long the British had been involved in North America (mostly fighting the Spanish) before Jamestown was even settled, and how two Native Americans were brought to Britain (from the failed Roanoke colony) before then as well. I was also appalled by how un-Christian and downright lazy the Jamestown settlers were: perhaps a timely and needed rebuttal to the currently popular myth that Jamestown was some miss ional type of settlement, established to convert the Natives.

Kafka promised; García Márquez delivers. Also, the man looks fantastic with a black eye.

huh...I don't really know how to review this book. I thought the writing was pretty good...although I feel like I was always waiting for something to happen, and rarely did something happen. I really disliked the main woman character, and had a hard time understanding anything about her. She left her children and husband for real burning love. It made me furious with her and I think it ruined her life. I can't think of anything that would make me leave my children...she just up and left. Something is wrong with her. The story is based upon two real life characters that did actually love each other and run away together...it is a pretty tragic story...and in the end just left me feeling sad.

A good whodunit. This is a cute cozy mystery series. I love the 40s PIs in mystery books and movies.
