Background/Synopsis: In The Kiterunner, Hosseini told the story of two boys in Afghanistan, one who went on to be fairly successful, and one who did not. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini tells a similar story, but of two women. Mariam is the bastard daughter of a prominent man in the nearby town who has several legitimate wives and many offspring. He is not an evil man, and builds Mariam’s mother a little house out in the countryside where Mariam is raised. He visits her, and she worships him. But when she ventures to his house and crosses the invisible line between her station and the station of her father’s actual family, it results in catastrophe. She is sold off to marriage to a man who is cruel. Lila is a blonde Afghani girl who has fallen in love with a one-legged boy. But a catastrophe in the town results in Lila being married to the same man as Mariam. At first, the two women do not get along, but eventually, they come together in a bond much like sisters. Strengths: Marvelous prose. Hosseini writes believably as the two women, and the story does an excellent job of painting a culture that is very different from the Western men and women who read it. Both women are strong and were dealt unfair cards in life, and the story shows the unending war in Kabul between the different ethnicities. Before reading this, I was not aware how many Afganis have blonde or red hair and green eyes. The story is well-crafted and I read it all on the flight from San Francisco to Amsterdam. Weaknesses: No obvious ones that come to mind. I do wonder what Muslim or Afghani women who read this think about the portrayal of arrange and multiple marriages. Recommendations: To anyone interested in Middle Eastern culture and current affairs, and a fine story.

This kind of post-apocalyptic "man vs. man" story has been told so many times before, I wasn't expecting much. But I was pleasantly surprised. The main character is well developed, unique, and interesting. The fact that the author chose to tell the story from her point of view made its strengths extend beyond the mere premise of the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next two.

I normally cannot pick favorite books out of a series, but this book stood out in the Robert Langdon triology. It was such an amazing and fascinating book. I never knew how it was going to end, which makes for an excellent book, in my opinion. While this book may have been the perfect end to the triology, I'm still holding out for another!
