Another book from the Castle TV Show universe. I have to say that I liked "Naked Heat" better than "Heat Wave". The first book tries really hard to tie-in the TV characters with its book counterparts. This one goes right in with the story, which it's itself better structured than in the first book. The plot is very good, kept me wanting to read this book even faster... You only get a sense of where the story is going right about at the end of the book, which in my opinion is good, as it keeps you interested through the whole plot. Hope they make more books. And it made me interested in who is this ghostwriter "Richard Castle".

I hand listed this as read, but I realized when I picked it up to reread, that I actually had not. While it isn't one of SEP's most memorable, it was still quite lovely.

** spoiler alert ** A flat review for a flat book. I'm sorry, it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either. I was having a hard time remembering things from Matched and felt like it didn't remind me very well. Ky and Cassia's voice sounded so similar I kept getting confused and having to flip back to the beginning of the chapter. But mostly I was bothered that the whole book was a big fat circle! It starts with Ky and Cassia separated they wander around in the mountains for awhile, find each other, wander around some more and then end up separated and Cassia ends up back in The Society??? Can you say filler book?!

I cannot say enough good things about this series of books. Just read them! I finished this series while I was sitting in the train between Kyoto and Tokyo on the day of the earthquake.

A journey of identity and tracing roots takes us through Africa, New Orleans and New York amidst in an environment of music and cultural insights. There were teasing references to some of the jazz greats and it was a nice musical journey from Africa to New Orleans. While the story starts with 2 best friends and a woman they both loved in 18th century Africa, the journeys their descendants take introduce us to the budding jazz movement and beyond. Unfolding the branches of the family trees through the generations and unraveling how they each descended from the 3 original Africans in the midst of all the music and tribal magic kept me turning the pages. I would have liked more details rather than passing references to Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, King Oliver, and Fate Marable, but that would be my only criticism of this book.

I sometimes wondered how different this edition was from the original one. It seemed like new text was just tacked on in places when maybe more of a comprehensive rewrite would have been useful. The point is that the funeral industry in the US has not changed much since they came under scrutiny mid-century, and consumers need to think more carefully about where their money is really going. It's actually pretty sleazy! The best part of this is all the quotes from industry-trade publications.
Mrs. Clarke does it again! After the absolutely spine chilling "Jonathan Strange and Mister Norell", Clarke comes up with short stories, which are more like footnotes to the novel. You don't need to have read the novel to appreciate the beauty, the gossipy nature of her writing or the Poe-bow-to-me creations of delicious horrors that Clarke paints for you but if you have read the novel, you cannot possibly not read these short stories!
