I was non thinking to buy a sci-fiction romance when I bought First Steps... The story of a man who willingly decides to mate with a single parents with two babies under one years old? pure science fiction!!! Ok, ok, I'm joking. This is a tenderful story about Chad, a lonely park ranger who arrives like a knight in shining armor to help Peter, a gay man who has decided to be father, and has used a substitutive mother to gain his goal. But the life of a single father, even more of a single father of twins, is not simple and also living in an isolated cottage in the mist of a forest. So when Chad appears on the front door is like a miracle. And all the book is a miracle: the miracle of life and love, love between lovers and love between parents and sons. It's a vry beautiful story, maybe a little too perfect if we see the real life: but this is one of the reason becuase I read romance, because I want to dream of the perfect love. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VYX7ZA/?...

Look at that cover. How could I resist that face? This just came in yesterday...I started reading immediately, read a bit at lunch and then finished last night. Obviously, a quick read. You don't have to be one of those people that cannot leave a dog alone to appreciate this one, but it helps. Julie opens the book with chapters about Otto, her first dog as a single person. Because of Otto's rewarding presence in her life, she decides to become a foster parent for Boston terriers, joining a Manhattan area group. A lot of the book is about her successes and failures doing just that, through marriage and the birth of her first child. I got right to the dogs dying chapter, sobbing, as hubby walks in, he came over, looked at the cover and said, "Dog's dying, huh?" I dare you to read about Moses and NOT have to wipe a tear. Makes you want to get on the floor and play with your four-legged friends, not sure if I want to foster, though. Some heartbreaking moments there. Recommended to all fellow dog nuts.

Expected this to be about basketball and perhaps race. It is about both of these things, but it is also so much more. The book taps into some of the biggest issues and is written in a manageable style that reluctant readers can handle. It takes several turns that I wasn't expecting, and by the final page I was sniffing back a lump in my throat. I'll be offering this to fans of Carl Deuker or Rich Wallace, and thoughtful guys who can take on a book about friendship and fate and redemption.

I have to say I was very disappointed with this book. It was slow and a bit boring at times, and I didn't find the characters and plot to be very interesting.

There's a problem with great secondary characters. Sometimes, they take over. I enjoyed Grace and Jack's story to be sure, but I kept hoping there'd be more about Thomas and Amelia. Which is good, because their book is coming out in two months rather than next summer. The Lost Duke opens with Grace Eversleigh traveling with her employee, the Dowager Duchess of Wyndham. I've read the companion with an annoying noble employer before, but I have to say the Dowager was on a whole other level of pain in the ass. The fact that Grace not only puts up with it, but lets it slide over her most of the time is both a testament to her character and shows that she clearly doesn't feel like she has much choice in the world. She has to put up with the Dowager because there's no other place for her. Grace and the Dowager are accosted by a highwayman who is, naturally, charming and probably handsome (it's dark, there's a mask). Something about this man makes the Dowager sit up and look closer -- his bottom features are almost an exact match for her long dead son. And so begins the story. Jack Audrey (born Cavendish) is indeed the son of the Dowager's middle son. His father perished at sea, and his mother died shortly after his birth. The reader is let in on this very early in the book so the suspense of that moment is done with. Will he take his place as the Duke or will he allow the current duke, Thomas, to continue as he has so ably? I liked this book. I'm not surprised by that fact, of course. JQ's one of my favorite authors and I don't believe I've come across anything by her that I don't love to pieces. (I even thoroughly enjoyed the last Bridgerton book, though some of my friends felt the series had run its course a few books earlier. Crazy people.) The characterizations were great, though yes, sometimes Jack was just a bit too charming. If only the men in my life had that problem, right? I think that this book could have easily been an A grade, except I think Amelia and Thomas stole the story in a lot of places. Where I should have focused on Grace and Jack, I was more interested in what could come out of Thomas's mouth or how Amelia might react. That's the problem with some characters. You bring them onto the stage but then they kind of direct the action from there. Another excellent addition to my bookshelf, of course, and I've already marked my calendar for September 30 and the next book, Mr. Cavendish, I Presume.

I really liked the first two stories in this collection, but I didn't think the third one was as strong. But some good ones followed.

This book had one of the most unlikeable characters I have ever read about! Jazz was so mean and hateful to everyone. The secondary characters were much better.

Vinge's stories about an approaching singularity are thought provoking, dramatic, and even pretty funny.
