As a child I lived with a low grade, chronic, legitimate concern of one day being ship wrecked on a deserted island. This book, along with Walter Farley's The Black Stallion, fed that fear and fascination. I haven't read it since probably 4th grade but count this book on this list of Books as Good Friends, for certain.

I wish I could give this book 3.5. It was very like a Sophie Kinsella book but not quite as witty and a bit cleaner. Very cute story. It didn't wrap up so well but being a series I'm not too disappointed by that. I'll just have to read the other books, I guess. Does anyone (Katie) know which is next in the series?

Elaine Dundy knows how to capture a scene. The parts of the book where something is actually happening work like gangbusters. The dialogue is clever but realistic. The details are pertinent but also hilarious. Most of the first chapter is a really long scene between the narrator and her new crush as they chat at a Paris café. If you are anything like me, this scene will pull you in. And you’ll assume that the rest of the book will continue in this fashion. But the book has other plans. Every so often there will be another great scene, well-told, but most of the time you’ll find yourself skipping over large paragraphs of filler material and plot twists that seem kind of pointless. This will depress you because the narrator’s dry sense-of-humor had such promise early on. But now that you know the story isn’t going anywhere, what’s the point? This book has a pseudo-memoir feel to it, and when memoirs have structural problems, you can’t really blame them because, hey, that’s life. Life is messy. Novels shouldn’t be.

Even though it is a classic, I did not find it as intruiging as I had hoped. Hardly remembered it from high school.

Eh, another Randy White book that I didn't finish. This one got boring and predictable.

Haunting. I really wish this was longer. I feel like much more could have been said. But I really enjoyed how the author followed six people throughout the tragic ordeal. Such a terrible and shameful event in history. P.S. Read this during AP Literature. Not "for" AP Lit. During. :)

2.55 stars--The books get a little better the further the story goes...

Re-reading after seeing the movie. As usual, the book is better (though Peter Sarsgaard and Mena Suvari are fantastic). I initially read The Mysteries of Pittsburgh after reading Kavalier and Clay and Wonder Boys, so I found this novel disappointing compared to the masterpieces of the other two. Considering it was Chabon's first novel, however, it's still really impressive. The characters are a bit forced, but then again aren't most people in their early 20's trying to force a persona of some sort? That's kind of what the book is about anyway.

I hated this. I'm starting to think that I just don't like British Literature. I mean, I disliked Jane Austin, Harry Potter, Shakespeare (well, he's hit or miss for me), and now this. The narration would take me so much out of the storyline that even with re-reading passages; I was still left confused as to what was happening. It also didn't help that I disliked the characters. I only liked Nana the dog, and Tink surprisingly enough. She wasn't the villain Disney originally had her, and the dog wasn't even in a quarter of the book. Yes, the people I liked were such minor characters. It was a shame Peter was such a, brat. Oh well. *edit* I wanted to add that the now racist and sexist terminology and gender was at times difficult for me to take. Europe can shove that whole notion of being better than racism because the image of the "noble savage" coupled with the native population only being referred to as "redskins" leapt off the page and slapped me in the face. This was also clearly written by a man too. Neverland was to escape responsibilities, so why would Wendy go to take them on? I could see for a little while; little girls often play house. But for months? How was that fun? At all? I do get that this is a reflection of its time, place, and culture. But I don't think I'll be sharing this one with my kids. Sometimes some things are better left in the past.
