one of the better biographies i have read. it is hard to imagine someone accomplishing as much as he did in his short life. he shaped the idea of western capitalism that came to fruition decades after his death by establishing the banking system, stock market, etc. fascinating story of an extraordinary man. it is a shame his status and impact is not as well known as washington, jefferson, and the rest of the founding fathers

This one is hard to rate. It is bleak, and I found the prose to be clunky, skimming over big chunks of exposition. I suppose I can see how disjointed run ons could make sense with an unreliable, depressed narrator, but it made it kind of difficult for me to read. On the other hand, the story hit me on a visceral level and stuck with me after I'd finished the book, which is saying something. Watch out for the Funhole. It changes things.

One of the most influential books that I have read is Laddie by Gene Stratton Porter. It is not an extraordinary story, but the book played an extraordinary part in my childhood. It was an old book that I found by digging through the attic in my grandparents farmhouse. I kept it hidden and would read it over and over when I was at their house. When I was old enough to “borrow” a book from Grandma, I would take Laddie home with me to read. Over time, the book got lost but I never forgot the story or my memories of hiding in the attic reading. Several years ago, my mother searched for a copy and gave it to me for Christmas. It is one of my most treasured books.

Hilarious. I like the idea of a bucket list, in fact I have one on my website and the way some of the goals are described really put a smile on my face, pretty much constantly throughout the whole book. I love the way he describes some of the items everyone has on their to do list. There are a even a few that I have already done and that just made me laugh even harder. Just goes to show that if you really want to do certain things before you die, do it for the right reason, not just because it's on everyone else's list... If you have a list of things to do before you die read this book, hopefully at least some of your goals are mentioned. You may get talked out of them and save yourself a fortune. Otherwise, if you still want to attempt them then maybe they are worth a try?
