...so a critical piece of the plot is tied to my employer. Curiosity got the better of me.

[This review was originally posted on my blog.] Valle de la Virgen is a quaint little town in the middle of nowhere. The majority of its inhabitants is quite content with their lot, and the few who dream of bigger things leave for the city. Ernesto, eldest son of Doña Nicanora and troublemaker pur sang, is one of the latter. With luck as bad as his late father's, he soon cuts his losses to return home with a shabby pick-up truck and a grubby foreigner to show for his efforts. To his exasperated mother's relief, doctor Arturo takes him on as an assistant and as a companion, because no other villager feels inclined to seek out his medical expertise. The town-dwellers are so used to their own customs and routines that any impending change feels like a threat. So they visit medicine doctors when illness strikes and the men seek out Don Bosco's barbershop for a daily shave and chat. Yet ironically, the traveling market is utterly unpredictable, driving the poor city doctor to distraction. The Gringito, whom I secretly suspect to be a North-American yogi, is the pebble that disturbs the surface of quiet backwater Valle de la Virgen. With the money he pays for lodging and meals, Nicanora starts to dream once more of opening a hat shop... and there the trouble begins. The misinterpretation of a well-meant suggestion leads to havoc and interestingly improvised solutions. The book acts like a magnifying lens, so that the reader can discover for himself how remarkably normal these remote village-dwelling people are. They are nothing like the "dirty, uneducated peasants" that urbanites accuse them of being. Nor are they the "oppressed yearning for a(nother) revolution", as romanticised by the People's Liberation Front. Doña Nicanora's Hat Shop is a delicious, rib-tickling, wistful romp of a novel that cheered me up while the incessant rain was busy ruining my summer break. The colourful villagers touched me with their antics and were a gentle reminder of how life is always precious no matter who we are and where we live.

I found this book to be really...weird. I was so confused a lot of the time. I get that there are two different worlds and Ava is/was in both of them. But the plot of the world where she is now, and the plot of the world that she came from was all mixed up. I tried to keep them straight but I couldn't. The only character I really liked was Jane. I felt so bad for her. All she wanted was her daughter, her Ava, and you could see how much she wanted to be love and have her "daughter" let her love her. I didn't really care about any of the other characters. I think that since they were involved in both worlds, I kept getting them confused and didn't connect with them. I dunno. I will say that it did keep me interested. I wanted to find out what was going on, both with what happened to the Ava of our world and why the Ava of the other world was pulled to this world. But I don't think I ever really got the answers. Or if I did, I just plain don't understand them!

Wow. Just, wow. Amazing companion to a beautiful movie. Spectacular work, guys; but it makes me even more sad that it ended. But you can't stop the signal... maybe there's still hope.

This is the fifth book in the South Seas Adventure series. This series is about the adventures of Abby Kendall, a young teenage girl, and her family and friends as they travel the South Seas in the late 1840s. Thirteen-year-old Abby Kendall and her friends and family are sailing to China on a trading venture when they come across a lifeless looking body floating on a barrel in the sea. Rescuing the stranger, they discover she is a young girl Abby's age, named Violet. Violet is a wealthy British girl who was sailing to join her father, who works in China for a trading company, when her ship was attacked and burned by pirates led by the infamous Zai Ching. But instead of being grateful for being rescued, Violet acts haughty and stuck-up, and steals the attention of everyone around her, especially Abby's best friend Luke and her mother. Abby's excitement at visiting the exotic land of China and exploring the city of Shanghai is spoiled by Violet's presence. When they must take Violet further south to join her father, a journey that means sailing through pirate-infested waters, Abby resents that they are now in danger because of Violet. Can Abby and Violet ever learn to get along? This is yet another great book from the South Seas Adventures series. I really enjoyed reading this new adventure featuring Abby and her family and friends, and I loved the exotic and unique historical setting. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy historical fiction, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

A bit predictable. Good fast read, and ope-ended enough that the heroine could make another appearance. SHE was more interesting than the plot in places - read like a Scout handbook!
