I thought this book was a beautiful tale of the struggles of adults to have friendships with imperfect friends and perfect ideals in their heads of what people should be. It's a genuine tale of love and compassion and the learnings of life.

With lean, clean, clear, and well-lit prose, Barry Unsworth delivers a flawless and restrained masterwork in a sober but subtly ironic tone. From the opening passages until the end, I was enveloped in the naturalness and ease in which this historical novel unfolded. On the precipice of World War I, a convergence of civilizations and a clash of egos surround an archaeological dig at Tell Erdek in Mesopotamia (Iraq). British archaeologist John Somerville seeks fame and something deeper as the head of the dig site of what he hopes to be an ancient Assyrian palace. For three years, he has come up almost empty-handed, and pressures surmount as a German railway threatens to cross into the path of the tell and sabotage the venerable past and his uncertain future. His wife is distant and newly energized by Alex Elliot, an American geologist posing as an archaeologist. Eliott is working in cunning collaboration and competition for different countries and interests bent on excavating oil rather than artifacts. Jehar, an Arab hired by Sommerville to assist him with various duties, has his own agenda to secure enough money to marry the beautiful woman of his dreams. Various other characters enrich the story with their guile and their quest to control not just the oil fields of Mesopotamia, but the hidden and unbidden tangibles and intangibles that haunt them. The plot quickens and thrills without ever becoming heavy-handed or sententious. This cautionary tale of the past ultimately reveals a chilling tableau of the present. If you seek superior and sublime literature, you will savor this book.

I liked the emotions of the hero and the heroine. Plotwise however it was all over the place. The first half was diving for treasure. Someone stealing treasure from under their noses. A couple of awkward redherrings. Solved it halfway through then suddenly there is a plane with a stolen microchip absolutely vital to national security that crashes right on top of the wreck they are salvaging. Coincidence anyone? Bunch more bad guys to beat. This should have been a totally different book. It seemed like it was. Meanwhile a third book was the relationship between the hero and heroine. There was a enough in that story you could have left out one of the other plots. And some of this relationship was given short shrift. The whole she slept with him and he kicked her out afterwards and forgot about it seemed like it was going to be a big angsty thing. But no, right in the middle of having sex she mentions it and he's like "oh that was you? Thanks for that" Boink, boink. I was expecting a whole bunch more from that. Also their relationship issues seemed to be solved a bit too easily. Still it was a fun and readable.

You can just feel something epic unfolding. You really need to read the history of J.R.R. Tolkien to appreciate these novels, thats all I can say.

This book captures love in its good and bad forms and is a great women's empowerment book. I re-read it every few years and discover something new with each read.

Patrick Tracy was one of my DI’s at Parris Island in 94. I clearly remember the first and many subsequence times he unleashed his wrath on the platoon, thinking he was one of the craziest people I ever had the privilege to meet. But I also remember the “calmer” times towards the end of boot camp when he started to treat us a little more like younger brothers. Reading this bought back a lot of memories and as far as I can tell he hasn’t changed a bit. Reading this book, I felt like I got a real report of what was going on in Iraq. He’s not one that would try to cover shit with perfume to make the reader feel good, he’s a straight shooter and tells you how it is whether you like it or not. This is defiantly a better way to really learn what went on than listening to news reports or books written by journalists that were attached to units but have no idea what it is like to hold a rifle. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know what the everyday life was like over there. Semper Fi

I loved this book. Every bit as charming as Paranormalcy, albeit a bit predictable. I appreciate Kiersten White's attention to the supporting characters, especially Jack, Arianna, and Reth. And Evie, finally a female heroine with cojones. I love Kiersten's tone, her humor, and the imaginary worlds she creates. Can't wait for book three!

Actually funny, with a decent mystery--several cuts above the typical regency.

Really enjoyed this book...suspenseful, moving, involving and one of those page-turners about which you say you'll read one more chapter, then keep going, even though it's really late!
