This was just ok. It is by the niece of Elizabeth Daly, the author of the Henry Gamadge mysteries. She uses some of the same characters, but she doesn't have quite the style or ability of her aunt. The book is a little loose and wanders. The ending is very anti-climactic and unsatisfying and the motivation of the characters is really unclear.

I just loved this book. All the villains featured in this story are done very well and the art is amazing. Needless to say, this is one of my favorite comic books. If you're familiar with Morrison's writing, you'll find it that The Joker in the book is very similar to the man himself. Read it, then write me to talk about it. ;)

I found myself disliking the man character of this book, I don't know what it was, but I just couldn't be proud of him for anything.

This is one of my favorite movies, and for a long time I've wanted to read the book. I've looked for it saveral times in the library, and never found it. Finally, Rick decided to just buy it off of Amazon. So,finally I read it. I should warn that there is some material in the book that I wish was not in it. Dallin started reading it first, also very excited about it, but never finished it because of the sexual content. I did read it. So, other than that, this is WAY better than the movie, as far as seeing the big picture of what was really going on in Coalwood, WV at the time these boys start building rockets. They really changed a lot of the story to make it fit in the movie. I still like the movie, but it is not really an accurate representation of the story. I'm a sucker for small town kids who make it in spite of all they have to fight against, and this is definitely one of those stories. Hickam does a nice job displaying the many facets of the challenges presented to him and the other Rocket Boys.

This is based on the CBC Massey Lectures, broadcast in November 2004 as part of the Ideas series on CBC Radio. Could "progress" be humanity's biggest enemy? He poses the three questions of Gauguin; where do we come from, who are we, where are we going. To answer these for humanity, Ronald Wright discusses three civilizations - Easter Island, Maya, the old Middle East - and traces their rise and the likely reasons for their eventual failure. From that he traces our overall move to civilization. There is a lot of interesting information here about these civilizations and the history (such as we know/believe it) of humanity's journey to today's civilization. Will we collapse too? No answer to that one! Overall quite good, but I think the Massey Lectures audio format would be better than this printed version.

I loved this book. It was creatively dark and mysterious but at the same time adventurous and childish. I have never read a book quite like this. I thought it was pretty genius. Nobody Owens is quite a unique character, one I have never read the likes of. Beware, the opening scene caught me totally off guard and is a little disturbing but it sets the background for the whole story.

I'm on page 155 of this quick, easy read novel. It takes place in Hawaii so that's the part I like the most! It's about a couple from N.Y. that move to the Hawaiian Island paradise, they seem to find paradise, and then lose it. It's a getaway novel, not heavy like the classics are for me right now. Finished this book - June, 2009 - it was a good "beach read"

Great book! The early chapters are a wonderful introduction to/refresher in basic music theory and the rest of the book discusses how the brain listens to, enjoys and plays music. There is a good discussion of why we humans play and enjoy music from the evolutionary perspective. I particularly like Levitin's range of musical illustrations, he chooses pieces from popular, jazz and classical music that are familiar enough that you needn't go to the internet or your collection to hear them, all of them excellent choices to illustrate his points! I plan to purchase this and give it to friends.
