This graphic novel depicts the spread of a mysterious STD amongst high schoolers in Seattle in the 70s. The disease manifests itself in bizarre physical mutations—tails, mouth, peeling skin etc… The graphic novel is as much as about the initial AIDS as it is about high school social politics, isolation, boredom and rebellion. The artwork is also remarkable as the drawings are also entirely done in black and white strokes (no gray-scale). As a warning for those who are sensitive, the novel has graphic depictions of male and female genitalia.

I'm not a fan of Dawkins's writing, as he tends to ramble and go off on tangents that are related to his main point, but sometimes only marginally... and they go on far too long. There was plenty of good information about evolution in the book, but it was tough to stay with it because of the asides and meanderings. There are much better books on the topic (even his own The Greatest Show on Earth is better, though it suffers from the same problems). In the end, the point that evolution is not a product of random chance is sufficiently made and explained, which is, after all, the intent of the book, so it is successful on that note.

Hard boiled detective fiction with vampire as P.I. What's not to love about that! Tough attitude: cool, cocky, flippant with the necessary but not cliched snappy dialogue. A compassionate streak for certain humans (e.g., his girlfriend, the street kid with the "killer" dog). There's really perverted bad guys. Vampire clans of all ilks: spiritual, neo hippies with a political agenda, bikers, "respectable" business tycoons. All the hard boiled elements are there, including the violence and bloodshed. I had to read this one well before my annual horror reading month. It was simply too much of a fun read to wait until then.
