Let me just say I LOVE Kresley Cole's IAD series and I was really looking forward to Lothaire's story. But it just fell flat for me. The story went on and on, but nothing exciting happened, it was just the developing relationship between Lothaire and Elizabeth. Usually Cole's stories have so much excitement and action going on outside of the relationship element that I can't put the book down. This one, while interesting, wasn't a non-stop page-turner. And as much as I liked Lothaire as a nemesis in the other books, I couldn't stand him as the main "romantic hero", and I use the term loosely. He had no redeeming qualities as a mate and was constantly mean and condescending to the heroine. I liked Elizabeth's spunk and intelligence, but why oh why would she ever fall for someone who treated her like Lothaire did. Even at the very end, I couldn't see why she would want to work out their relationship or why she'd want to be with him at all. I never felt like I had insight as to why she fell in love with him, other than Stockholm Syndrome?? Maybe?? I rated this a solid three stars because I liked delving into the history of Lothaire, seeing him interact with his "friends", and learning about the Dacia. I, of course, liked the cameos by the other IAD players and I really liked Elizabeth. I also really like Lothaire as an evil vampire, his wit, his arrogance, his hotness, but his character just couldn't pull it off as the romantic lead. He just wasn't. He had a chance to redeem himself when he realizes something major (don't want to give away a spoiler, even though it's obvious), and I thought okay, this is it, then nothing. He just kept being a jerk. Overall, an okay read with some sizzling between-the-sheets scenes. Although, even those left me squeamish at times because I'm not sure Elizabeth was a consenting partner, so much as a coerced captive doing what she had to to survive.
