It was a little "tweeny" for me, but easy reading and enjoyable. I got into it very quickly and always looked forward to each chapter.

This book changed my life. It's hard to explain. You really have to read it. (Based on my experience, it helps to be a Catholic who loves books.) Kathleen Norris is a poet and has a poet's perspective on Catholicism and the ways of Benedictine monks. But she's also a Protestant, with a refreshingly level-headed outsider's perspective on the seemingly impenetrable world inside a monastery. The monks and nuns she describes are real, honest, witty and faithful people, with great stories and a passion for their religion that seems very accessible. My favorite of the chapters in the book are her essays on Catholic women saints (one on St. Maria Goretti and 1950's American Catholic misogyny, and one on the virgin martyrs). They're very frank about the problems in the way the church has treated women and how Catholic women of faith, including nuns, have struggled with that over the years. Very fresh, compelling stuff.

I love the are staves and responses at the end of each chapter. I'm going to take a break in between this book and the final one before finishing. I can't quite explain why but I just think I should. I have a lot more that I need to read first, like The Stand and Hearts in Atlantis. But I wasn't just talking about Stephen King novels, I'm also talking about all the other pieces of literature that I need to read. Just one more turn before I reach the clearing at the end of the path.

The sexist views throughout the book were very difficult to swallow! I hate the viewpoint that it is okay if a man strays or is unfaithful but that a woman NEVER can do that. No one should ever stray once they are married for any reason whatsoever!!!! And since this was the first book in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series by Perry I expected there to be a bit more of a romance. But both characters were very stiff and growing closer together, but not enough for a huge declaration of love for me. The whole book was odd and unsettling and I'm not planning on reading any more books by this author.

Read during my obsession with dictators. Mostly I picked this up because I wanted to understand the reference from Saturday Night Live.

The best book I have ever read, and continue to read often. It you have an interest in restoring, growing or discovering your wonder, this is the book. Murchie is a modern day Leonardo, who has mastered so many pursuits it's astonishing. The first half of the book is an exhaustive description of the natural world and how everything works from trees to individual cells, the life of dunes, to 26 human senses (not just 5). These things are described in ways that are revelatory...such new and excellent ways of explaining things we take for granted, and things we have never contemplated. Then the second half is dedicated to 7 mysterious principles like Transcendance, Interconnectedness, the Omnipresence of Life, Life's analogies on Land, Sea and Sky, Living geometry and order, the polarity principle, the germination of worlds, and divinity. You can open the book anywhere and become fascinated in seconds. He is a scientist who writes with the heart of a poet, so even when he is describing an intricate biological function, I find myself smiling and completely engrossed. Especially great for writers, both as inspiration and reference.

Audiobook read by Rebecca Lowman. I thought this was a classic Nora Roberts book and I enjoyed the ride. I liked the characters and the fire fighting. When I first started listening to the book I wasn't fond of the reader but before long I'd settled in started enjoying.

Don't try to read this on paper. Get the unabridged audio edition. It's extremely entertaining that way. This is a great story and a wonderful example of an entertaining novel of ideas.

Neither the book nor its protagonist found a means to flourish beyond the initial promising spurt. The first 300 pages were great; the last 200... meh.
