I really went back and forth between four and five stars on this one, but in the end a few things made me decide to pull back a bit. In my eyes, a five-star book is practically perfect and, although Poison Study came close, there are a few (small!) flaws. But first, the good: I think the strongest thing Poison Study has going for is the protagonist, Yelena. On paper, she doesn't initially seem starkly different from most YA female protagonists...she's an orphan, apparently has some kind of latent magical power, and is implied to be pretty (when she's not being jailed or beaten up). What's interesting is that Yelena actually evolves and changes so that, by the end of the novel, she's a stronger and more confident person. Prior to the novel, Yelena has been raped, tortured, and imprisoned, to the point where she looks at herself as more of a rat than a person: Like a rat, my only hope of escape was to find a hole to hide in. As the novel progresses, Yelena trains and learns to fight, and as a direct result of being able to defend herself, she becomes more confident and assertive, which I liked seeing in a female character. The world development is also very strong here, and does an excellent job of drawing you in. Yelena currently lives in a military society run by a mysterious man called the Commander, who is unsurprisingly rigid and pretty ruthless. Ms. Snyder does a very good job of juxtaposing the current dictatorial society to the previous monarchy, and to be honest, neither society comes out looking like the good option. They're both pretty flawed, and I'm curious to see where some of the societal issues will go in the next two books. Now, the not-so-good parts: despite her increased resiliency and independence, Yelena still relied on Valek, the Commander's assassin and Yelena's love interest, too much for my liking. She also seemed to have some blinds spots where Valek was concerned (at one point, she wonders why he doesn't fight off eight armed men single-handedly!) so I'm not sure she's seeing him for who he is, exactly. Still, there was a serious lack of insta-love, thank God, so I'm willing to wait and see where this goes in the next book. And the ending, while not a cliff-hanger, doesn't really wrap things up. (view spoiler) All in all, I definitely plan to continue the series. Poison Study isn't without its flaws, but the strengths did a good job distracting me from them.

Four stars more for concept than content. Decent story and very interesting concept, but Supes just doesn't do it for me.

This fairly short essay is worth reading if you've ever considered yourself a pacifist. He offers several arguments for why its not only a failed strategy for effecting change but actually causes harm to those who are engaged in armed resistance against state power.

** spoiler alert ** I'm rereading this for what must be the fourth or fifth time. I know other people love Grass and Beauty, but this is my favorite of Tepper's books. It has everything: an interesting world (well, universe), well-written and amusingly named characters, humor, illuminating social commentary, AND the god that makes enables society to run peaceably and happily is a fungus! A fungus! Why didn't anyone think of that ages ago? I've read almost everything by Tepper and sometimes, unfortunately, her social commentary veers into the land of polemic. Too bad, because she is a more intelligent and subtle writer than that.

What an amazing tale. Again, completely unique in it's nature. Fascinating and surprising; very vivid characters.

Not King's best work by a long shot... I still finished it, but this was clearly written because he has major issues with cell phones. A lot of it didn't make much sense.

Here is a book that is wonderful and awful at the same time. Prepare to be shocked, disgusted, awed, and thrilled. This book is, in my opinion, one of the best fantasy novels out there. Visualize every fantasy creature you can—they’re in there. The story is about a seemingly normal girl who’s totally ignorant of her past and present. She knows nothing of the fantasy world she’s living in. . . That is until one night at the Pandemonium, where her life is changed forever. Her eyes are opened to a world unseen by mundanes (humans). Within a day she finds herself thrust into the life of Shadowhunters, the half-human, half-angel hunters of Downworlders (the offspring of demons). Expect tons of action scenes, a little bit of sinful romance, and twists that’ll have you reeling for more.
