My friend recommended it to me and I read it over winter break. The description was amazing and I could "see" the events play out in my mind. The suspense was thrilling and when I read the part about the truth of the ship, I really felt spooked.

HBO show seems super loyal to the books. Can't wait for the rest of the seasons to come out! Completely hooked on this series and am dismayed that I've reached the last book released so far...will have to wait a few years (decades?) til book 6.

I was immediately taken in by the language and characters in this wonderful book. I don't care what people say, it was always clear to me that this was not a true story and I don't think Arthur Golden duped anyone.

Ugh. This is the first and last book I'll read by this author. My search for another adventure-type author like Dan Brown goes on. The plot in Atlantis Found got increasingly convoluted and ridiculous until I bailed after reading at least 2/3 of the book. I hardly ever do that but I couldn't take anymore.

Sometimes I liked his writing a lot. Sometimes it was annoying or unsatisfying. Either way, it was pretty weird. Here's an excerpt! "In the parking lot, I met a man carrying a basketful of laundry. He explained that he had just washed his clothes but there was something unutterably troubling and unfinished about what had happened. His laundry was not done, he said; it was in error. He set the basket down and tugged a pair of washed-looking pants from the tangle and shook them out in my direction. 'Vouch for me,' he said." And that's the end of a story.

I admit that my expectations for this book were shaped by the inclusion of "To Say Nothing of the Dog" on my list of all-time fun comfort reads and that I was hoping for more of the same. What I got instead was a book about England during WWII, with time travelers. It did not, alas, make me laugh out loud, but is certainly a well-written novel with interesting moments. Where I think it doesn't quite cut it is on character development (everyone seemed fairly cardboard) and plot. The cliff-hanger ending is fairly predictable and the characters spin and spin and spin building up to it until I wanted to shake them. I did enjoy the read up until the last 80 pages or so though so I may pick up the second half.

Currently working on a paper on Aesthetics, Reading, Representation, Art using Barnes' text. This book is brilliantly written and contains some interesting passages on the "night" which I believe is a metaphor for the production of difference. It's as the Dr. says "let me tell you how the day and night are related by their division". Good stuff. I have read this small book about three times.

Vowell becomes obsessed with presidential assassinations (her writing makes it seem as if it is a quirk, but I am sure the book deal was more of a motivator) and so she journeys to every imaginable place (tourist and otherwise) connected to the history of three of these events (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinnley). She details the history behind each assassination while weaving in bits of social commentary, political critique, and an assessment of American cultural values. And she does so with the sarcastic humor of a well-informed non-expert.
