After completing this book, I've read all of Murakami's novels. This one was strikingly normal--much more in the vein of "Norwegian Wood" than the other novels that I've read, though even more normal than that work. I mean "normal" in a good way--Murakami is a master of a certain style of nagging mystery, a feeling that the borders between the real and the imagined have become quite blurred. He could write a story about a trip to the grocery store and somehow make you wonder if it really happened--in this novel, he turns what is essentially a love story into something that almost seems like it was imagined, that it might have been all in the narrator's head. Through the main character Hajime's relationships with Shimamoto, Izumi, and Yukiko, we learn about love and loss and how the steady march of time cannot be contradicted. Hajime's experiences with these three women reveal different things about himself and about the nature of real love. Recommended to fans of Murakami's work (of course) and to those looking with a love story laced with a bit of the mysterious.

Fabulous book. Couldn't put it down. The author describes his experience and the personalities and lives of other holocaust victims during their time in Austwich in a very gentle, humerous, matter of fact way. Sad and tragic but at the same time it was enspiring to read of the refusal of these people to lay down and die.

I have been reading this book since P was born...so a year almost. I am really enjoying it, just finding the time to sit down with it is tough because I don't want to put it down when I pick it up.

Before this, my favorite book was The Last of the really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews. Seabiscuit is now my favorite book of all time. I've read it about 7 times since first picking it up (thank you to Mom and Amy), and it is incredible. Seabiscuit is my favorite horse in the entire world. Too bad he was a legend 50 years before I was born.

Stone Field, True Arrow will appeal to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider. Maya has to leave her beloved father in Japan. She begins a new life with her emotionally abusive mother in America. Maya is culturally confused and her life is punctuated by the inability to form close emotional bonds. Maya meets Eric, and falls in love. She is forced to confront the truth about her childhood. She is transformed by the healing power of love. But Maya’s cool detachment remains. Maybe this was meant to be a literary technique to show something. It left me feeling annoyed.

What a wonderful book. Ive read the whole series and makes me appreciate my friends and my sister that much more. Ann Brasheres creates wonderful three-dimensional characters.

Loved this book! Great for discussion too. Talk about coming from nothing to making a life for yourself. Very inspiring.

Technically brilliant, and very compelling, and yet one of the most discouraging novels in print. Trivia worth noting : read JTO when you're feeling up and as untouchable as Teflon. The novel is so bleak that even Hardy gave up on fiction after completing it, and never wrote a novel again.

One of the best books I've ever read, seriously. It's the true story of Jeannette Walls's life of total poverty. Well, that sounds uplifting, right? Well, it's not. But you NEED to read this book. I can't stress it enough. In the book, Walls's parents are total deadbeats, but not in the typical "We live in a trailer and Darlene ain't got no money fo' a new soccer uniform" deadbeat, it was a lot more complex. Her mother makes it abundantly clear that she doesn't have any regard for parental responsibilities, as she literally watches her kids as they're starving while hoarding a jumbo Hershey's bar for herself. Walls's father, while a bit more likeable, is still not any better, as he's a raging alcoholic that literally battles his demons, disappearing for weeks at a time, and coming back beaten and blotto. Throughout the book, we follow Walls and her brother and sister as they grow up, and against all odds (and not in a cheesy way), make successful lives for themselves in New York City, while their parents follow them there, choosing to live on the streets. Ultimately, Walls struggles with guilt of her new-found success, because as she lives in her Penthouse, her parents are rooting through dumpsters. Seriously, READ THIS BOOK.
