My favorite one of all the Harry Potter books. I liked the movie a lot, too.

This is a practical book about various ways to pray for your children, including suggested prayers. I plan to re-read this each year. I am interested in reading some of Stormie's other "The Power of Praying..." books.

This was a really interesting, well written story. I'm a little over-sensitive to children, elderly or handicap folks being in any kind of frightening or painful situation and so parts of it were a little hard for me to read, but I thought it was a fascinating look at autism.

One of those books it is hard to admit enjoying, let alone claim it was amazing, but what the hell. Fine, it was based on a text based computer games from the 1980's...fine, it has terrible puns and cheap jokes...but dammit, I enjoy it. And if it says something about me that I enjoy reading trashy sci-fi novels over in-depth analysis of the human condition (yep, it does, and it ain't good) then so be it. If you need me, I'll be watching cartoons.

Barbara Kingsolver is an excellent writer that brings her characters internal struggles to life while providing distinctive settings for her stories. I enjoyed this novel's setting in the Applachian mountains and how the characters paths were all intertwined sometimes unknowingly.

AFFECTING AND ENGAGING. "With his hand in hers and her trust in him, they ran."–page 23 No one could be more surprised than I at my rating THE STORY OF BEAUTIFUL GIRL: A Novel, by Rachel Simon a four-star read. Many misgivings, frustrations and annoyances with both the story and the storytelling, early on, left me seriously tempted to chuck this one in the one-star, 'abandoned' bin. I'm glad that I didn't. After all is said and done, 'Beautiful Girl' is an affecting, compelling, illuminating, and entertaining story; with a bevy of delightfully likable characters. I could have done with fewer extraneous calls to 'prayer', but even that, annoying as it was, didn't distract too much from the 'big drawing'. Recommendation: "A rainy day is better than no day. A small happiness can make a big sadness less sad."—page 241. Reading THE STORY OF BEAUTIFUL GIRL will wrench your heart, but it will afford you some genuine smiles, too. "The child who couldn't stay with her family. The mother who couldn't keep her child. The woman who'd waited a lifetime for a man who could never return."—page 251 NOOKbook edition, 284 pages.

I read this book in just over a day, it was SSOOO good, such a nice break from all the paranormal stuff I've been reading lately! Belly is such a down-to-earth girl and I could totally relate to her. I think... Read more on my blog! :) http://addictedtonovels.blogspot.com/

I read this book after Guns, Germs, and Steel and feel that this was an excellent progression. GGS first discusses how societies succeed and why the cards have fallen they way they did. In Collapse, Jared discusses how societies fail. One of the best parts of the book is in the introduction where Jared states that he assumed that all collapses were because of, or primarily driven by, environmental issues. However, in the course of his studies in preparing for the book, he found out that this was not true and that collapses were just as complex as build ups, and developed a set of factors. This really helps the reader build confidence in Jared's book later as you can rest assured that the book is not a clear-cut political agenda. This book primarily serves as a warning: there are a lot of causes for collapse and a collapses means the total annihilation of a society, or at least and incredible drop in that society's standard of living. Again, Jared handles the discussion of very advanced, scientific topics with skill: there are no confusing scientific terms used to confuse the reader, instead the focus is on accessibility. Some topics include soil formation and erosion, wars, trade routes, natural disasters, etc. I strongly recommend this book, especially to readers who enjoy GGS.
