This was an incredibly sweet and satisfying story about how four dogs and a cat brought a family back together. The writing is excellent, and the characters- including the dogs all have distinct personalities. It made me laugh and it made me cry- not from sadness, but because I was moved by the story. It's an absolutely worthwile read for those who are slightly too young to appreciate Spinelli or Laurel Snyder, but the same amount of magic.

A quick read--but insightful. I was most interested to see if the way the help's attitude/behavior was portrayed was similar to what I have heard from my African-American friends. I can never know what it means to be a black American, but books such as this, while entertaining and good reads, are most valuable to me as a peek into a part of American society with which I have no first-hand experience.

Okay, okay. So I have all these award winning books in my bookcase and then this piece of candy. Well, this is a guilty pleasure if ever there was one. Not the best writing, but a story fit for the juiciest teen/chick/Lifetime flick. If you secretly love trash movies once in a while, you will enjoy this book. I read it in one long sitting - it is kind of addictive.

Oh Switters. He's a very good tour guide, both for his adventures and as an avatar for Tom Robbin's love of langugae. And women. As for religion, it's a not a love affair, but certainly a fascination. Robbins gives me what I like in fiction- an optimistic look at people through a liberal love affair with words. If you like adventure, and you believe that sometimes wallowing in metaphor is kind of like revelling in bed after sex, then this book is for you.

There should be at least a dozen stars available for this book, for this series. Suzanne Collins created an amazing world that gets under your skin and haunts your every heartbeat. In the last of the Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay had a distinct edge to it that was not the same as the previous two books. As with the other two, Katniss enters a deadly arena, only this time it is not the main focus of the book - the war against the Capitol is. There is a heavy political feel to Mockingjay, but it retained its wry sense of humour, intense action and bitter sweet agony. The author ended the series perfectly, with no convenient loose ends tied up with tidy bows, but came to a natural end that left you craving more. There are more than a few surprises in this novel that keep popping up right to the bitter end. I cannot gush about this series enough. The best I have read in a long, long time.

No disrespect to Ms. Patton Walsh, but I wish she would quit writing these. I love Peter and Harriet so very much that I feel compelled to read. However, I spend most of the time while reading her Sayers continuations yelling things like "That's a contradiction of what she said in Busman's Honeymoon, you idiot!" and "Peter would never DO that!!" at the book. Then things get thrown, I don't finish the book and librarians look at me sternly when I return books with scuffed covers that were lent to me in pristine condition. All in all, this is a perfectly good little mystery of the caliber of an Ann Granger, but it does not even approach the skill at plotting and crafting characters that Sayers possessed. And the way in which Patton Walsh rehashes previous conversations and characters is tiresome. If you like the Sayers novels, I would leave this one alone.
