I liked this book a lot. The characters were really well fleshed out and engaging. The story was, for lack of a better term, plump. There was a LOT going on! I liked that it was fast paced, but the pace did sometimes take me out of the story - as in, "That happened a little too fast, I'm not sure I believe it." That didn't happen enough to make me stop reading, though! Fair warning - it gets a little WTH in the last chapters. But by the time it got really weird, I was so into it I just smiled and went along for the ride. I loved the lead characters so much (Rose and Onyx especially) that I just had to see what was going to happen to them! The author left it open to another story about these people. I would definitely be interested to peek into their lives again. Just FYI, I gave it only three stars for a couple of reasons: one was that there were a few very glaring editing mistakes. I'm a snob for punctuation and typos. Another reason is that it definitely is not for everyone. There's a LOT of graphic violence and sex. I don't think that it was gratuitous because it was true to the characters and to the story, but it was enough that I know its presence would ruin the book for others. And finally, I took away a star just because of the latter part of the book. I did chuckle a few times at the events that were taking place because they were SO out there. It almost became a different book. I still liked the book, but it was just SUCH a wacky turn that I had to consciously accept it - not effortlessly go along. I'm not sure how I would have changed that - maybe given more foreshadowing? It just seemed a bit abrupt to me. All in all, it was a very good spring break read.

I read this when I was twelve. Back then, I didn't see the anti communist or pro nationalist themes. In my young mind this was a book set in a dystopian future where everyone lacks the ability to see or feel things as we do now. It is the job of the giver to carry the "burden" of being an individual.

This is an inspirational book about race, about life and about just making good choices, no matter what life throws your way. I loved this family and I loved this book.

I found it hard to believe halfway through that this was Katherine Howe's debut novel....it is so wonderfully written. I takes what is factual data about the Salem Witch Trials, mixes it with local folklore, throws in family history and ends up with a great novel that refused to be put down. It is told from a mostly modern perspective with little interludes from the past to tie the story together and BAM you have the WOW factor. I highly recommend this book for all kinds of readers but especially if you enjoy books about the history of Salem and the witch trials......
